in Nashville Predators and Bettman.
That’s the tune Gary Bettman and the Nashville Predators may be whistling very soon…
The Predators’ owner Craig Leipold has walked away from earlier negotiations with Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie (who was planning on relocating the team to Hamilton, ON), and is now said to be in negotiations with William “Boots” DelBiaggio of California. DelBiaggio’s offer is close to $50 million less than Balsillie’s, and it is said that he plans on relocating the team to Kansas City once the Predators’ lease in Nashville is over.
Based on what we’ve read, it appears that Gary Bettman has had a strong hand in making sure the deal with Balsillie does not go through, and that Kansas City ends up with the team. However, it could ultimately end up being decided by a majority of the NHL board of governors, who apparently, may be in favor of moving the team to Hamilton, since it may bring an economic boom to the NHL. The question is… who carries the most weight here, and if it’s the board of governors, will they do what’s best for the game, or will they let Gary continue to run the show and carry on with his movement to make the NHL exclusively an American league?

Gary Bettman received a Columbus, OH warm welcome at the NHL draft last Friday evening:
Now if all of the people in that arena would have been wearing a Fire Bettman shirt! Then he really would have felt comfortable.

Cro-magnon Gary speaks! Bettman reacted rather angrily to questions about the pending move of the Predators from Nashville to Hamilton on Wednesday. Bettman offered this retort when queried about his statement that the Canadian billionaire reportedly said he intended to keep the Preds in the Music City: “When I made that statement, that’s what he had told me.” I’m guessing the VS. Network told him that the Stanley Cup Finals would break all kinds of ratings records too. The usually calm former NBA assistant may have had his feet held to the fire at the board of governors’ meeting held to discuss (ugh!) more rule changes. Could this be Bettman’s last blow, er…, bow? With a new chair at the helm and the league sinking fast, me thinks that change is in the air.

Billionaire Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie today formally applied to move the Nashville Predators. Concurrently, his approval of purchase is pending with the league. Many have speculated that Balsillie’s objective is to move the team to Hamilton, Ontario. However, it is becoming more apparent that Hamilton is the final destination of the Predators. In the meantime, NHL loyals await a greater variety for Hockey Night in Canada! Gary Bettman has consistently maintained that the Predators will stay in Nashville. Given the state of NHL hockey today, does Bettman have the clout to stand a chance of keeping hockey in the Music City?

Post Update 06/07/07: Game 3 of SCF makes history! Lowest rated prime time broadcast in NBC history!
Now how you going to spin that one Gary?
Bettman has consistently maintained throughout the season that his deal with the obscure VS. channel has shown improved viewership of NHL hockey. Gary must be standing on his head when looking at the chart of viewership ratings. The Stanley Cup Finals are receiving 22% fewer viewers than last year’s Finals with a whopping 33% drop in the ratings for Game 2. Perhaps they might improve if Gary were to ride one of those bulls on that channel instead of giving us the bull about his “improvements”? Uh, owners? You can stop counting your fewer dollars now and start thinking about a replacement!
