Don’t Bet(t) on it…

There are some reports coming out that the NHL is in talks with ESPN to return games to the ESPN2 network in the 2008-2009 season. Gary Bettman and the NHL must be paying some attention to our polls here at FireBettman, as the latest poll shows that most fans believe NHL hockey should be televised on ESPN. We’re waiting to receive thanks for our scientific research. ;)
Apparently, NBC is not very interested in renewing its contract with the NHL following next year, after receiving terribly low ratings in viewership last season.

However, there are some things that would need to be worked out with the oh-so-wonderful Versus Network, which Bettman had banked on as being the next greatest thing for the NHL. Versus holds all cable rights for NHL games until the 2011 season, after Bettman and his brilliant mind decided to give them an extended contract last year. Note that the Vs. airing of the NHL All-Star game last year received a .7 rating… a 76% drop from the 2004 season game, and their regular season games averaged only a 0.2 Nielson rating. So, Versus would have to give up their exclusive cable rights in order for this deal to go through.

This deal looks possible… but note that even if it does happen, the games will be shown on ESPN2 (not ESPN), and they will be only the weekend games that were shown on NBC and the late playoff games. Furthermore, remember that Gary Bettman represents the NHL here, and there is a very good chance that his ego or his lack of brains will get in the way and the deal will fall through.

The most interesting part of this breaking news is the talk about an NHL Network TV channel starting… according to the article, the network would be a 24 hour television channel dedicated to the NHL, and would broadcast 50 live NHL games in the 2007-2008 season. So, we may have our own NHL Network starting this fall! Let’s just hope that Bret Hull and/or Gary “The Prick” Thorne do not anchor the new NHL Network.

Bettman and Robbin’ (Canada, that is)

The Bettmobile is stuck in Nashville and Robbin’ Canada is all that’s been accomplished by our wholly inept commissioner. “Cost certainty”. How many times did we hear that come from the hole in Bettman’s face? Now it’s more like “cost un-certainty” with the salaries being offered. The Duck’s Dustin Penner, who was making league minimum last season, was just offered $4.5 mil a year to jump ship and play for the Oilers. Others have also eclipsed the pre-lockout salaries. Sen’s Emery took a leap to $9.5 mil a year; Sabre’s Roy goes from $675K to $4 mil, etc,…

Point being, even cost certainty, which was supposedly the greatest coup Garrulous Gary accomplished in the lockout, is scarce. With TV revenues in the toilet and Duh Commish forcing owners to take $50 mil less to sell their team guess who’s going to have to come up with more bucks to see a game. But wait. Why are all these salaries going through the roof when revenues are declining? Oh Canada! Providing a whopping 30% of all NHL revenue but getting the royal shaft from Gary, our northern friends are quite the example of dedicated hockey fans. The Canadian dollar has gained strength and Canadian hockey fans gotta have their hockey fix. But Bettman says “Screw you CBC” after getting $600 mil from them. Bettman says “Screw you Hamilton” after quashing their hopes. Bettman says “Screw you and your Hockey Day in Canada”. Yes, the quintessential Ugly American lives! And he’s our NHL commissioner.

There is a man behind the curtain…

In his article on ESPN.com today, Scott Burnside has confirmed our belief all along… that Gary Bettman was behind getting Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold to break off negotiations in the sale of the team to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie.

Balsillie’s legal adviser Richard Rodier has made statements confirming this, and ESPN has also obtained emails between Leipold and Rodier, which contain discussions about Bettman’s involvement.

It appears as though Bettman has been and acted alone in this movement to keep a new team out of Canada, in following his vision of making the NHL exclusively a USA league. The only other name we’ve seen discussed in this matter is the Toronto Maple Leafs, because of a fear that a Hamilton team would steal their fan base. However, we have not seen any official comments released from the Maple Leafs on this issue.

Burnside brings up a great point how Bettman may have overstepped his bounds and made himself highly unpopular among the board of governors, and throughout the league… duh!! What is it going to take for them all to realize how bad Bettman is for the NHL? Hopefully not much more… it looks like we might find out in September, after the next board of governors meeting. Fire Bettman!!!!!

Say eh to Nashville…

It looks like the Nashville Predators might just stay in Nashville, and will not head to Kansas City or Hamilton, ON. Daniel Tolensky from HockeyBuzz.com reports that Predators owner Craig Leopold is meeting with our favorite person Gary Bettman, and the Nashville group that may be purchasing the team today.
Congratulations to Predators fans on keeping a failing team in your city, and to Gary Bettman on another boneheaded move that will continue to prevent the NHL and hockey from reaching its popularity potential.
