Simon sits for 30 games…
Published by 7 months, 1 week ago in Blog Entries, Penalties and Suspensions. 7 CommentsUpdate on 12/20 @ 1:15p.m. EST: Thanks to R. Grimm for correcting our post below, and pointing out that Don Murdoch of the New York Rangers received the longest suspension of 40 games in 1978 for cocaine possession. Our post below should say that Chris Simon has received the longest suspension in the NHL for an act of violence.
NHL Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell suspended Chris Simon today for 30 games… breaking the longest suspension record of 25 games, which was previously held by Chris Simon. This latest suspension comes from Simon’s stepping on Pittsburgh’s Jarkko Ruutu’s foot on December 15th, and will be Simon’s seventh suspension as an NHL player.
Islanders coach Ted Nolan says the suspension is “excessive”. A lot of journalists said that the last 25 game suspension was not enough, and it seems now like they were right. Simon has had plenty of chances to right his wrongs and has done completely the opposite. What do you think? Has Gary’s Bettman’s right-hand-man come down hard enough on Simon?

Simple Simon Strikes Again
Published by 7 months, 1 week ago in Bettman, Videos, Penalties and Suspensions. 4 CommentsUpdate @ 6:20p.m. EST: Chris Simon will be taking a leave of absence from the Islanders, after his incident Saturday night when he was given a match penalty for intent to harm Jarkko Ruutu. According to statements released by Simon and the Islanders, he plans on seeking counseling during this time of leave. Meanwhile, we still await the ruling of Gary Bettman on the situation and the future of Chris Simon in the NHL.
Chris Simon of the New York Islanders had another “whoops” moment on Saturday night, when he intentionally stepped down on the foot of Pittsbugh’s Jarkko Ruutu with his skate blade. Simon was given a match penalty for his actions, and now -according to the rulebook- Simon will be suspended from play until Gary Bettman rules on the incident.
Simon received a 25 game suspension last March for his baseball style swing to the neck and head of Ryan Hollweg of the New York Rangers. That incident gave Simon his sixth NHL suspension.
What is Bettman going to do? Should Simon be banned from the NHL? Or just receive another petty suspension? The last one obviously had no long-lasting effect on Simple Simon.
Here is the video of the incident:

NHL Hour with Gary Bettman today on XM Radio
Published by 7 months, 1 week ago in Bettman and xm radio. 2 CommentsUpdate @ 10:15p.m. EST: To listen to the NHL hour from today (12/13/07) please click here (MP3 file, 55 MB).
Gary Bettman’s “NHL Hour” XM radio show will be on again today (and every Thursday) at 4p.m. EST. So get your tough questions ready! You can call your questions/comments in at 1-877-645-6696 or e-mail NHLHOUR@NHL.com. If you have any criticism for the commissioner or the league, we doubt you will get on the air… based on what we’ve heard the past two weeks, they only put fans on the air who praise Bettman and what he’s done, or are from one of the southern team’s territories (which supports Bettman). But we must keep trying! According to NHL.com, today’s guest will be Rocky Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks chairman.
You can listen to the show on XM radio channel 204 or go to NHL.com, where they will be posting a link to listen sometime later today… the link is usually in the top left box with the big picture and text underneath it.
We will try to record the show today and post it tonight or tomorrow, for those of you who are unable to listen in. Sorry we didn’t post last week’s show… we had technical difficulties.
So get your questions ready and let your favorite commissioner know what hockey fans really think of the way the NHL is being run!!!

Ted Lindsay places blame on Bettman…
Published by 7 months, 3 weeks ago in Detroit Red Wings and Bettman. 20 CommentsWhile in Montreal for the Red Wings vs. Canadiens original six matchup last night (12/4/07) in Montreal, Ted Lindsay pointed the finger at our favorite commissioner Gary Bettman, blaming him for ruining rivalries between teams in the league, and partly for the poor attendance in Detroit this year. According to Mr. Lindsay, Bettman is using the successful teams and taking advantage of them to benefit the weaker teams… and in turn, that hurts the strong and successful teams, as we are currently seeing. Don’t worry Ted, we and a million other fans are right with you on this one. This is what happens when you have someone who has no respect for and history within the game of hockey running the league. Last night was Detroit’s first visit to Montreal since 2003, and is the only game between these two original six teams this year.
Also, last night during the game, the Vs. commentator brought up the idea of having an “Original Six Day”, where there would be three games on a Saturday played by the original six teams… Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and the New York Rangers. Sort of like a Hockey Day in Canada (which will not happen this year thanks to the idiocy of Bettman). We here at FB think this is a GREAT idea. I can’t think of anything that would be better for the NHL, or a better way to show respect for the game, fans, and players by making something like this happen. But, this probably makes too much sense for it to ever happen…
what do you think Gary Bettman?
