They didn't. Gary Bettman locked the players out and he did it to save the sunshine states teams which keep losing money and which Gary Bettmen introduced to the NHL. He did this even though the demographic analysis showed it was a bad idea because Gary didn't believe in sound business models, he believes in the magic of Disneyland and treating the refereeing like it was PR. This proved to be so unpopular that he became beholden to Don Cherry's opinion which is why they practically handed the Stanley cup to Boston. At that point the GMs held a meeting without inviting Bettmen to replace Colin Campbell with Brenden Shanahan - a good choice, no thanks to Bettman. On several occasions during Bettman's lockout the majority (about 2/3) of the owners were willing to accept a deal offered by the NHLPA but Bettman rejected it because it wasn't good enouph for the 8 teams that he created and yet can still not make money. There are 3 Canadian cities and 3 American cities which are ready for an team according to the demographic analysis but Bettman won't transfer any of the losing teams to those cities because he continues to believe in Disneyland over math and science. Now we have a very tight salary cap and cba which means that none of the GMs have any reason to spend money on the draft system, player development or salaries because all it takes is one or two injuries and a Stanley cup winning team will not even make the playoffs the very next year. What is the use of being in a successful market like Monteal, Toronto or New York when you rake in money but can't spend it to improve the team and give loyal fans a reason to continue watching? This isn't about owners vs players or capitalism vs socialism. This is about a dishonest idiot who can't understand that people in the sunshine states are far too enamoured of basketball, baseball and football - games that don't require warm weather - to give a fig about hockey. You can't PR your way past that problem. Hockey is making more money than ever before in spite of Bettman's colossal mistake and still he locks out the players instead of moving the teams north. The game was slow and violent and the refereeing was breeding good hockey because the commissioners decided to treat the officiating as PR rather than as a matter of fairness. Then, slowly I have witnessed a steady improvement in officiating and the result was that before you decided to tinker with it, hockey was at its best. The pace was quick, and the game was exciting and the body checking clean, hard and constact throughout the game. Goon hockey had dissapeared and hockey was at its best. But then you became the commissioner and anounced that you could sell the game to the Americans but screwing all that up. Goals production went down. Body checking disapeared from the game altogether and wanton violence has set in. Now winning is a matter of luck. A team can't be good for more than one year in a row and now we're stuck with the salary cap and the periodic lockouts that result. Gary, please resign. Thanks, Ed and everyone I know.
