Top 10 Reasons Gary Bettman Should be Fired

An astute board of governors should relieve Mr. Bettman of his duties for several reasons:

10. He wants hockey played where no ice has ever been found.
9. He’s changed uniforms so they look bad on fans.
8. He signed a tv contract with the worst network.
7. He’s screwed up the rules so much that new and old fans alike are
bored with the game.
6. He watered down the league with the salary cap.
5. He moved the All-Star game to wednesday so nobody would watch it.
4. He destroyed decades old rivalries.
3. He stopped the sport for a whole year.
2. He took fighting out of hockey.
AND the number one reason why he should be fired:

1. He came from the NBA

Please add your reasons to the list!!

    it’s officially official!

bettman has just been endorsed by canadian conservative prime minister stephen harper during the feb 17th leafs/oilers first intermission on nhl radio:

“bettman has done a great job re-branding the game.”

if there ever was a doubt whether bettman was and is an asshole, our leading dickhead himself has proclaimed the rattman good for the game.

they’ll both be going down in flames, and the sooner the better for this great hockey nation. (shudder to think that harper could possibly last another two months, let alone 14 years. OMG! i’m gonna puke.)

    (i hate this “branding” crap)

  2. 2 PuckHead Feb 19th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

A great job re-branding the game??? hah. Where has Mr. Harper been? The last thing we need is Canada officially endorsing Bettman!!

  3. 3 jerm Feb 20th, 2007 at 10:32 am

now i know you’re just trying to get under my skin.

harper is not canada, as bush is not america.

  4. 4 Matt Feb 20th, 2007 at 10:44 am

hah. I think you’re just easily offended… I wasn’t trying to get under your skin at all, but rather, agree with you.
Are you trying to offend me? Bush is not America??!!! You got that right!!! I don’t think all of our complaints about Bush could fit on this site… so we won’t go there :)

    He looks like a heeb!

The NBA one sticks with me….its like Stern planned this or something….makes you wonder.

  7. 7 Matt Feb 21st, 2007 at 1:33 pm

yeah, it kind of reminds you of the “good old boys” of business and politics… the desire for control by the same people over things they see profit potential in.

i dont know. hockey works well in dallas, atlanta, carolina, and st louis.

  9. 9 sabresown Mar 24th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

i dont really look into the backgrounds of comissioners, but how did he come from the NBA?

  10. 10 Byrath Jul 17th, 2007 at 9:11 am

    Re: Shawn
I wouldn’t lump St. Louis in with Dallas, Atlanta and Carolina .. we do have real winter weather here for one, and also we’ve had a team since 1967. On the other hand, when we had a non-playoff team for the first time in over two decades, attendance dropped like a brick, barely 10k for many games. Granted, that was the year right after the year-long strike, but still.

As for the ‘Top 10 Reasons..’, its not a bad list, but why the displeasure with the salary cap? It was economically necessary, plus it gives small market teams a fair shot, whats not to love about that?

  11. 11 CptInsano Feb 6th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Is there a petition I can gladly put my John Hancock on to get this dumbass exiled out of North America? I started watching the NHL when I was 8 years old in 1989. At first I saw how the league was had tradition and was solid. Slowly over the years I’ve seen it go down the crapper. I could make a list that could go on forever, but the main thing is Bettman should be fired. Like people above it doesn’t make since to me why there are NHL teams in cities that don’t have a winter. The other day while watchin my cursed Blue Jackets, it was nice to see that it was 85 degrees in Phoenix where they were playing. How could you even get into watching a hockey game there when you come in the door with sunscreen on? I’ll try to make my list of what NEEDS to happen:

    1. Fire Bettman

    2. Contract the league to 24 teams instead of the present day 30. Yes, this means getting rid of these teams:
*Anaheim- yeah they won the Cup and no one could give a shit. might help if they played some place where it snows. LA is a warm climate city and having one team should be overkill. Good thing the Kings got history.
*Carolina- had it been a decade later when Hartford plopped, the team would be somewhere else where someone might give a damn. Ashame so much talent in such a bad location.
*Florida- they had there 15 minutes of fame. Any team that has a palm tree as their secondary logo should have their ownership privelges revoked.
*Tampa Bay- just like Florida their time has come and gone. Must suck for Lecavalier being a great player in a sandbox.
*Atlanta- didnt work with the Flames, not working with the Thrashers
*Nashville- they gotta go somewhere soon, send em to Quebec or Winnipeg.
*Phoenix- winter time sport moves from Canada to Arizona? I’m stumped.

    3. Put hockey back in places that deserve it.
Bring back the Jets and Nordiques. I wanted to at least see what those new Nordiques unis looked like on the ice.

    4. Shootout
You spend 65 minutes playing head-on hockey, bustin your ass to get a winner. You send out three of your top shooters and they flub up. Now wasnt that a waste of 65 minutes?

    5. OTL?
We lost coach, but we got one point closer to clinching a playoff spot! Since when did we start taking out the pro players for ice cream?

    6. Wales vs. Campbell
I remember the good ole days when the All Star game met something, and it was nice watching the black-orange rivalry.

    7. 4 Divisions, NOT 6!
It was more competitive when there were 4 divisions. Atlanta currently has a top 3 seed in the East. Stick them in the West and they are on the bubble for even making the playoffs.

With 4 divisions, there needs to be realignment. In my own world I can dream… so…
*Patrick – NJ, NYI, NYR, PHI, PIT, WSH
*Adams – BOS, BUF, CBJ, MTL, OTW, TOR
*Norris – CHI, DAL, DET, MIN, STL, WPG
*Smythe – CGY, COL, EDM, LA, SJ, VAN
Give the league a year or two to get back on its feet. Then bring back the Nordiques and put a team in Hamilton.
Also, give the Jackets a chance. Yes, they are my local team, but the fan base is amazing. If only the owners would get out their checkbooks and sign some talent instead of always hoping for a AHL miracle.

The freakin Arena Football League gets more coverage in the US than the NHL does, thats sad. I’m limited to only Jackets games and the game of the week on NBC. I dont get VS, nor would I want to upgrade my Dish Network service just to watch a handful of games a month and then spend the rest of my time watching Billy Bob get that buck.

This goes to the player who acheives the ultimate bonar of the year award. Players nominated so far: Chris Simon, Todd Bertuzzi, Jaromir Jagr, Wayne Gretzky – for being the great one and deciding that its alright to coach a team that use to be in Canada and that now resides in the sand.

  12. 12 jim Apr 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Bettman is the most useless tool that ever existed…if he and harper are friends…they should go to tool heaven. Bring the cup north of the 43rd parallel, whether montreal, detriot, calgary or philly. fuck this selling hockey where it does not belong. he is such an ASSHOLE. I love it when he and Ron Maclean got in a fight a few years ago….ron basically told him…gary your an asshole

    all together

Gary, you are the biggest rear facing ORIFICE on the planet…get a wax job

  13. 13 jim Apr 21st, 2008 at 7:23 pm

(great site, its great some of our American cousins care about the game as much as us igloo dwellers.)

  14. 14 southern belle Apr 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

ok…so most of this I do agree with…but honestly, taking those certain teams out of the west and south would not solve much of anything. Believe it or not there are people down who appreciate and support those teams. Hockey does deserve to be down here. Look at Carolina and Anaheim…Stanley Cup champs…yeah, ok they are not defending it very well, but those two teams are very much appreciated and supported. Don’t punish the western and southern states just cause we do not have “regular winter weather.” Not trying to step on any toes, but you must know the truth before making accusations about teams who deserve to stay on the ice…whever that may be…the sunshine state, or the palmetto state…they are where they belong.

  15. 15 Laura Apr 22nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

    Re: Southern belle
Ice in Southern states is horrible. I recall a few year ago when Niklas Kronwall broke his leg because of divots in the ice, since the outside was sweltering. Taking them away from these cities would help the league a great deal. The term is a fair weather fan, and thats what all the southern and california fan are.

  16. 16 jim Apr 22nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Southernbelle: yes there are devoted fans in the south. But its not the same. I seem to recall reading that the stanley cup party in anaheim wa sheld in the parking lot of the rink??? No disrepect but if the cup was brought to Toronto (hahhaha, as if) or Montreal or Pitssburgh or Boston, it would be a MAJOR event that would tie up the downtown for hours. I went to a newspaper on line in SC when Stillman and Commodore were traded to Ottawa, hardly any coverage at all in the sports section………

  17. 17 southern belle Apr 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Jim…I agree that celebrations and news coverage of the sport differs from city to city, but that still does not mean that there aren’t devoted fans down south who go to great lengths to keep up with their teams. The south, west and the north are very different places and the way they celebrate are different as well. Just because Anaheim decided to celebrate in the parking lot doesn’t mean that it wasn’t celebrated anywhere else. Boston, and Pittsburg are known for their public festivities whereas the southern states (Bible Belt) and other places are known for the low key celebrations.
Laura…honestly, fair weather fan is not the term to be used. Agreed, there might be some of those down here and there…but there are some true HOCKEY FANS and no other kind of fan but that. Why punish the souther/western states for weather that we can not control. To take hockey away(which takes place mostly in the winter, and believe it or not…its very cold here in the south) would do no good. The NHL would face losing many supporters and fans if they did that.

  18. 18 Truth Apr 23rd, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Ok, 1st hockey is big in the south, it may not be as big as in the north but still. If you move all the teams up north then you are going to lose more fans. If you keep them in the south and west then you attempt to bring more potential fans in. And I mean come on, the ice in the south isn’t as good? That just makes for better competition. Should we take football out of the north because it snows too much during the end of the season? NO, that makes for great home field advantage opportunities. Taking hockey out of the south would just demolish hockey and the NHL. Not to mention that if a northern team could finally win the cup maybe they would move more up there, hahaha.

  19. 19 Jim Apr 24th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Southernbelle: Fair enough. Despite my misgivings of greedy owners (including ones here in Canada) and grossly overpaying an asskissing asshole (Bettman), I accept your point..there are hockey loving people in the south..many of them displaced Canadian pensioners who have too much money so they can afford health insurance…..ha ha

I guess what bugs us guys up here is that Bettman was simply hired to get franchise fees from gullible billionaires in the south, a tv contract (which they can’t get and they give games to NBC for free)…the incompetance of how this league’s management is soooooo cynically greedy with absolutely no regard for the sport. The Toronto Maple Leafs up here in the great north are a great example of how a Team can be managed solely for the purpose of making money without any regard to respect to the sport. One of the highest valued sports franchises in the world, no championshiop in 40 years, not making the playoffs in years, lining the pockets of its inept management for the teachers pension fund in ontario, fans who show up cos they must be smoking California gold)

If this is a rant. I am sorry. What really pissed me off was the playoffs last year. Ottawa versus Bufflao. I went to North Conway NH for shopping that weekend and when I checked into the Hotel at 4:00 pm I turned on NBC to see the end of the game ( I had to watch NBC cos I was in the states), The game wemt into overtime BUT because it was the Kentucky derby,,,,,we saw 30 minutes of some pandy ass’d jockeys kissing horses asses in the lead up to the Kentucky Derby,,,,,Aldrefesson scored in overtime while NBC was showing a pre race blah blah balh about some horse that i believe is dead now….fell on its arse or soemething/,,,, all because the nhl can’t get that money shaker contract.

I only wish the league could admit…we are not the NFL, we are not NL/AL baseball….NBA nope we are not…we are not a MAJOR sport but we can serve major regional markets with a reasonable number of teams in markets that matter….but guess this is not that way a business is run…

So enjoy hockey in 100 Farenheit heat (its often that here now as the finals are in June and with global warming its that hot in June in Canada but thats cool because by the time the Maple Leafs win the Cup, we’ll be toast…

  20. 20 Truth Apr 24th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

I think we should start a site that says fire all commissioners in every sport. That way we can bring the love of the sport back and not the greed of the money. There used to be a time where players didn’t switch teams. Nowadays it is hard to keep up with who is on what team, no matter what sport you are watching. It is mainly because players want more money. They should want to play for free. Play to plyay. But anyways, Stanley Cup Finals Party southern style of course! southernbelle u betta be there.

  21. 21 Bluetongues Jul 17th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I have been scratching my head because of this realignment idea and I thought; How about instead of reduction of teams how about expansion to give life to the league. The return of some old favorites like Winnipeg and Quebec and the introduction of Hamilton (CAN) and Seattle. The last one may have people in a spin, but after the Supersonics left for a southern state, this leaves hockey with no competition at that time of the year. Seattle has had success in Junior leagues and to me sounds like a hockey may have success there. This will mean some change in the divisions. They are as follows:

BOS, BUF, MTL, OTW, TOR, QUEBEC (a few Canadian teams)

    ATL, CAR, CBJ, Fl, TB

The Southern teams will have play each other more. CBJ I feel it fits well into that division, sorry to CBJ fans if you are not a fan of this, I reckon you would make the playoffs in this division this year.

Since I want to return to the old naming system, the old names return, and the Pacific is now known as the Taylor division after the LA King great Dave Taylor and the Southeastern division should be named the Francis division after the Hartford and Carolina great Ron Francis. Add some suggestions

  22. 22 Fann Fantastic Aug 5th, 2008 at 10:24 am

Bettman is a scrawny little weasley who is out for a buck. Thats it. He couldn’t give a rat’s ass what sport he is representing. Hell, he could be the commissioner of professional lawn bowling as long as it turns a dollar.
As for the southern teams, I have said for years that the lack of real snow makes for a lack or real understanding among the population. I’m not saying there aren’t real hockey fans in the south. We all know you’re there and we love you for loving our national pastime with us. But as has been mentioned, the inability to create a stable a consistent ice surface is not just a minor embarrassment, it’s a liability. Not only is it a hazard to the players but it interferes with the normal progression of a game. If you can’t make hard ass ice, you shouldn’t have a team. It would be like a football stadium with large dirt patches. The NFL would be all over their asses to fix the problem. Could you imagine a NASCAR track with potholes?

Bettman is stubborn and short sighted. He had the chance to have the Predators moved to a city that would have packed the arena every game instead he fights tooth and nail to keep them in a city where the team can’t even pay for it’s lease on the arena with out help. Why did this occur? Simple, a Hamilton or Waterloo team would have drawn fans from one of the most lucrative areas in hockey. It doesn’t matter how bad the Leafs play, what stupid mistakes the management makes or what excuses get fed to the fans. They still buy tickets, they still pack the seats and they still watch on HNIC. What Betty doesn’t realize is that most of the fans in Hamilton watch the Bulldogs and piss on the Leafs. Taking Predators and combining them with the bulldogs would have been an absolute coup for the fans, something to truly rally behind, but all for naught. Brilliant market evaluation you Putz! He should be hung up by his short and curlies with a target on his face. That would make the next All-Star slap shot competition something worth watching.

  23. 23 Cylon NX38496 Dec 6th, 2008 at 2:43 am

First off I agree. Especially about the “Uniform System”. There was nothing wrong with jersey’s with happen to be comfortable to play in as well as just lounge around watching the game in as well.

As far as getting rid of the teams in the south, because there is no real snow. Bull what about stepping up and prove your team deserves to be in the league. Let’s talk about those southern expansion teams, The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have both won The Cup. As well as Carolina. Seriously do you all realize it’s been 15 years since the last Canadian team has won The Cup? And have had only 3 appearances in that time in the finals? and all 3 of those were beat by those southern teams you think should be booted out of the league.

So why I agree that cutting teams would be better. There just isn’t enough talent to spread around. Another formula needs to be implemented other than climate conditions.

  24. 24 Bettman's Retarded Grandfather Dec 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am

LEAVE BETTY ALONE! He’s doing the best he can considering the missing chromosome and all. Not to mention he only has half a testicle so he truly does not understand anything involving testosterone. In order to undo his gross incompetence there needs to be drastic measures and a reduction in the league would be the first place to start. (right after firing him and returning his drooling ass to the care home he wandered away from) The reason a Canadian team hasn’t won the cup in 14 years is that there are 30 freaking teams competing for the right to lift Lord Stanley. The majority of those players still come from Canada. The rest are Euro’s and a small smattering by contrast are American. If we limit the number of markets to 20 teams just think how much talent would be available for each team. The standard of play would shoot through the roof with the level of competition. Not just between teams, but the friendly kind between teammates that would see top shooters vying for the best record in a season. You could see players like Karya, Sakic, Foresburg to name three extend their glory years instead of languishing in markets that don’t recognize their talent and frankly don’t give a damn. Finally to be forgotten as they slip into retirement unnoticed. Sure, the ducks won a cup, as did Tampa Bay but I ask you, who, in their home city, really gave a puck.

  25. 25 Eric Jan 23rd, 2009 at 7:34 pm

    to all,

I just found my way onto this site and my biggest problems with bettman have been in the way in which the league has been marketed and televised, the lockouts, and the new uniforms. Being a big hockey fan from the States I feel like the NHL needs to be marketed better in US for it to thrive because the game will always be number 1 in Canada. The NHL was on such a rise following the 94 that Sports Illustrated ran an article talking about the decline of basketball juxtaposed with the rise of hockey and if hockey could surpass basketball, of course the 95 lockout killed all this momentum. Obviously the second lcokout was disasterous as the NHL has now become the only major sport to lose an entire season. Bettman also spurned the FOX network in 98 who would have done much more with the NHL than ESPN, showing games on both FSN and FX with the hopes that putting a major sport on these chanels would help FOX compete with ESPN. Instead the governors and Bettman took the money. I think the league needs to leave Versus for a network with more national draw than Versus.

Yes the new uniforms suck and the league never should have messed with the great tradition of hockey sweaters. However I see a lot of people here calling out the NHL and FOX for the glow puck, which in all fairness, was an attempt to draw MORE people to the game whose complaints were inability to see the puck.

I also see a lot of people ragging on the NHL for expansion into the south. Guess what folks if you ever want to see hockey eclipse another major sport it has to move into the south and many of these teams have done well in the south. Furthermore the NHL will never franchises back into cities such as Winnepeg or Quebec. Quebec as an almost entirely French speaking city has offers little to most non-french speaking fans as well as players. Additionally Quebec is too small of a market to put a team in if the NHL ever wants to see gains in popularity. Same goes with Winnepeg, another place players hated to play in. Hamilton is also far too small of a television market.

Well thats all thanks for listening

  26. 26 dave i May 5th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

You are a piece of shit no matter haow you look at it. You ruined the game of hockey and your spineless pussy named Colin Campbell is as useless as tits on a bull. He suspends Brashere but does nothing to AVERY or to KUNITZ????? How far up that faggy little pussy Cindy Crybaby’s ass do you have to get before you understand that all of the fans see what complete bias you show to Pittsburgh and it is really nausiating. Go fuck yourself and drop dead both you and that spineless cocksucker Colin Campbell.

  27. 27 Jeb Meate May 6th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

This Phoenix issue highlights the major issue with Bettman. He’s a little fucking Nazi control freak. Ball-silly Rim Job offers 212.5 Mil for a a bankrupt team, as long as he can move it to a market that will actually generate a fucking revenue stream. Holy Smackers, what a ridiculous proposition. Bettman’s response? He deosn’t believe that the other owners would approve of Ballsilie’s ownership bid. I ask you. If I wanted to buy a MacDonald’s franchise would I have to seek the approval of all the other owners with foot massages and blow-jobs? No. This is the same fucking bullshit that Bettman pulled when Jim wanted to rescue another floundering team, If Bankruptcy court accepts the offer from Ballsilie with the terms, there is going to be a choice presented to Bettman. Either Help Balsillie and Southern Ontario secure a team and reap the rewards of good placement, or stand in the way with legal fight after legal fight until Bettman is exposed to the the world of hockey and anyone who gives a rats ass as the spineless, conniving, back handed, leprous little fuck that that he really is. Go ahead Betty, kill the deal that would save a team all because it it would be moved above the Mason/Dixon line.

  28. 28 Hockeyfan Jun 4th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Bettman needs to go. The reason is he hates hockey and has tried to destroy the game. A man that has no experience, never played hockey was not the obvious choice. Who the hell hired him? Who recommended him they should be ousted as well. This is ridiculous. He is full of beans on not wanting to expand to Ontario. He would not know hockey if a puck hit him in the face while his sagging ass went into the net. I don’t like Bettman because he hates hockey. I want my hockey back, the way it was once played. If Bettman wants to fudge the rules then let him go and be the commander and chief of Golf. He can rub shoulders with George Bush Jr. Hey Bettman get lost, get out of our game you have not business in it. You are a liar, oops I meant lawyer. pssttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  29. 29 Hockeyfan Jun 4th, 2009 at 12:14 am

BTW Bettman as a business man should realize that Hockey is the fans game. Without us viewing and buying tickets he has not job. Now there’s a thought. Bettman stopped hockey for a year, the fans should boycott hockey for a year until the NHL meets with our demand of getting rid of Bettman and his stupid sidekick, the other liar/lawyer. I bet you they never even practiced law, they just have degrees.

  30. 30 John Sep 11th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Bettman is a JOKE plain and simple, as well as that Judge (should be barred)

  31. 31 George LaRock Nov 9th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

    1) He’s american (yes i hold that against every american especially Brett hull!!!!)

Gary Bettman wants to forbid NHL players from playing in the Olympics past 2010!
F**k you Gary!! The Olympics are the biggest showcasing in sports and who are you to force them out of playing for their country? What are you going to do if they go anyway? (i.e. Ovechkin and others) 82% of players in the NHL are “for” playing in the Olympics!!! Proof enough?

  33. 33 LT Mar 19th, 2010 at 3:13 am

I love the thread here, nice to see people exchange opinons and ideas instead of what is typical of the internet…..cyberspace bullying and hotshot talking.

As far as Bettman is concerned I have to stop every now and then as I puke in my mouth when his name comes up. All arguments on this thread are incredibly well thought out and valid, however the one thing that is only briefly mentioned is how he and Colon have f_cked up the NHL tradition with the rule changes. Keep touch icing but ban hitting from behind…… we have every dick head player turning his back on every hit and whinning about getting hit?!?! Used to be that you had a responsibility to take care of yourself and make sure you were not putting yourself in a bad position. Remember when you were young and the coaches told you not to turn your back when in the kill zone (2-4 feet from the boards). Why hasn’t the NHL provided data and statistics showing how hitting from behind rule that changed the game into a “cycle the puck down low game” has improved head and neck injuries….you know they have the research data in hand and would show it if it supported their cause. Problem is that head and neck injuries have went up with the new rule because all players are being taught at young ages to turn their back on an incoming player so they can cycle the puck or draw a penalty. Why would an NBA commissioner know this?!?! Lets make a new rule and figure out how introducing new rules have an impact on the game later on before we make them a rule???? Great way to kill a hundred years of tradition. In all the years I have played hockey, the only major injuries came from icing the puck where the lead player on the puck was destroyed by the player that skated in behind and realized he was late so he decided to make the lead man pay….but no let us leave the touch icing and stop a one step hit from behind.

    Steroids and Equipment:

We are now giving out multi game suspensions for hits (legal or not) that result in injury. I remember Mark Messier and Scott Stevens being the dirtiest and meanist bastards in the league and are being held in high regard by everyone to this day, however look at the trail of blood and finished careers they left behind. The difference between what they did and what is happening now is in the equipment. I can take an elbow or shoulder pad and drive it through the wall of my living room into the next room. No one can say that roids have not entered “our” game. When I was a kid I was in a hockey school where Dave Semenko was a coach, without his equipment his arms were literally bigger than his thighs! It was ridiculous! His jaw bone was the same size as John Kordic`s whom I also met…god bless.

I mentioned roids becuase it is well known that every NHL heavy weight is on has done several cycles. Most NHL players are now doing cycles in the summer to gear up for the season…this is a quote from a Jr player entering the NHL and being stunned even though he has seen much of this in the W.

This beloved sport of mine was taught to me by my father and now it is being destroyed… least from the understanding I was taught about the game. Maybe we are wrong….maybe the NHL should be like an american showcase as the NFL or MLB where the team with the most roids wins!?!?!?!

The NHL is going to turn into the Italian Soccer league with everyone diving on ever brush with each opponent. Which Canadian wants to watch that?

    Gary Bettman sucks! Go Canada!

  36. 36 vansport Apr 20th, 2010 at 3:09 am

Bettman must go. As long as Gary Bettman is the commissioner of the NHL the following things will never happen:

    1. The casual fan in the States will become interested in hockey.

    2. A Canadian team will win the Stanley Cup (in the 10 years before Bettman, Canadian teams won 8 of 10 Stanley Cups…in the 17 years since…ZERO!!!)

    3. NHL games will be decided by the players and not by on-ice and off-ice officials…the rules are now so convoluted that they can be interpreted any way that the league feels suits them best. ie. Now, EVERYTHING is a penalty, but the refs DON’T HAVE TO call it unless they feel like it? WHAT?

    4. Teams in cities that don’t like/understand hockey will be moved to cities that do. There are teams in PHX, NSH, ATL, etc. because WHY?

    5. A major US TV contract on a station that viewers can actually access.

    6. Common sense.

    7. Decisions based on the good of the GAME, and the league instead of whatever best covers Gary’s ass and hides his many, many mistakes.

  37. 37 Craig T. Apr 23rd, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Probably the MOST annoying thing that Bettman does, is have all 30 teams in the league do the exact thing during games. In other words it’s 30 cookie cut teams scattered about in some places that are a joke.

As for my list of Teams that should just hang it up:

-Phoenix, cut your losses, move back to Winnepeg. It amazes me that a team could be this poorly managed and the general public couldn’t give two squirts of piss about a team that pays the Cardinals to allow their fans to park for free.

-Florida…. who? You mean to tell me anyone actually gives a care?

-Tampa Bay only gets fans of northern teams to come see this poor excuse of a team.

-Nashville… If I can go buy a ticket to one of their playoff games for 4 people 25 mins before the game, it’s seriously time to examine how much anyone gives a care about hockey.

    - Carolina… Please refer to Tampa Bay

    - Anaheim… Failed attempt at creating interest in hockey through Disney

    - Atlanta… Get rid of the damn cheerleaders, this isn’t the NFL

Cities that should have a hockey team because it does or it COULD snow there and their proximity to a hockey market…

Seattle – Boy what a rivalry would that be with Vancouver

    Portland – Same with Seattle/Van

Salt Lake City – The city needs something more entertaining than the Jazz and Colorado isn’t too far away

Quebec – They need a team back

Houston – Hockey works in Dallas, so spark up one hell of a rivalry there

Milwaukee – Why the hell not? Chicago isn’t far…

San Francisco or Sacramento: San Jose LOVES their team, lots of San Jose transplant and commuters live in Sacramento…

  38. 38 Craig T. Apr 23rd, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Oh, I forgot, maybe if the SF/Sacramento thing doesn’t seem right, Cincinati could theoretically entertain a team….

  39. 39 Crazywabbit May 13th, 2010 at 8:36 am

It’s mindboggling that Detroit gets to play Columbus 8 times a year and Toronto, Montreal and most of the other Original Six teams (excluding Chicago) once a year. Who came up with that one? Buttman!

  40. 40 Michael G Jul 5th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Bettman is the worst Commissinor since Clarence Campbell. Its pretty obvious the Bettman has it out for Canada. If they were recommeding a move to say Ohio or New Orleans he would approve. Did anyone see the Interview bettman had on Hockey Night in Canada in Game 2 of the cup final? He basicly said the putting another team in Canada is no good. Look here Bettman, we invented the game, we started the NHL from scratch with Toronto and Montreal. But I do partly blame Ballsillie for the failed attempt at moving to Hamilton. If he had just bought the team without saying anything and be done with it, he would own the team and could have moved it for this season. And look, he signs TV deals with NBC, Fox and ABC. ALL ARE AMERICAN!!!! I mean no offense to Americans but bettman should just go back where he came from. TO THE NBA!

  41. 41 Michael G Jul 5th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

And I almost forgot, Bettman has many other reasons to be fired,
    1. No Olympics
Ovechkin has already said that he will go anyway so what are you gonna do?Expel him from the NHL? What if Crosby goes? Expel him too? Then theres Kovelchuck. If you expel them, then the board of govenors will get mad and you can go run the NFL/MLB since those are 2 sports you havnt ruined yet.

    2.No more bear hug?
Come on now thats just stupid.A lot more players are gonna get checked and hit and injured. The bear hug never hurt a person.

    3. It is not possible for Canada to have the cup. I think its more than a coincidence that no Canadian Team has won the cup since bettman came along. I am a habs fan. I watched every game they played this postseason. The refs in all those games worked for the NHL, and by extension Gary Bettman. If Bettman simply says hey, i dont want the habs to get a chance at the cup they might win so only call a few penalties against american teams. I saw a lot of penalties not called by the refs in the Penguins and Capitals Series. We need a new commissinor and personally, i think it is time that it went to a Canadian.

    4. Its basketball or hockey take your pick you cant like both.

5.You are fat, bald and ugly Gary Bettman.

  42. 42 Michael G Jul 5th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

Now the fact that some cities should and shouldnt have a team.

    Cities that shouldnt.
-Phionix – They will be gone soon anyway.
-Atlanta – Most people only ever came to see Kovalchuck play he’s gone now.
-Anahiem – Just a lame excuse to keep a franchise out of Canada
-Dallas – Whenever a texan sees snow they think it is powder milk from a cow or something
-Florida – Whats the point? Its just useless

    Cities that Should
-Hamilton – The Hamilton Bulldogs do amazingly well for an AHL team, if there were a NHL team here than it would make money, trust me
-Winnipeg – You know what, Winnipeg having a hockey team just feels right.
-Quebec – Fans who cant get Habs tickets turn here, money will be made
-Millwaukee – Why thye hell not? They have a baseball team.
-Seattle – So…… this is what its come to. Anahiem, Dallas, Phionix, Florida and Atlanta have teams, but a city people can do winter sports in doesnt get one?

Just my Opinion, but Bettman is a bonehead. He looked really creepy on draft night like: Hehe so many boys whos career I can run by having them traded to Phionix and no one cares if they get a hat trick there hehehehehehehehehehe!

  43. 43 Bettman sucks Aug 6th, 2010 at 10:14 am

Gary Bettman is the Nhl’s biggest idiot. He is deneing Canada of another NHL Team, He denies headshots are even a problem, and he has even got one of the nicest celebrities Ron Maclean convinced of his moronity.

  44. 44 redwingsfan102 Aug 15th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

he only wants teams with no budget to win the cup look at what the wings did they beat the cyotes in 7 and the wings got screwd in the second round

  45. 45 charger73 Sep 26th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

  46. 46 NotAnIdiot Oct 7th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Reason 4,198: This year (2010) he decided that ALL Gamecenter Live subscribers are required to pay the Microsoft Tax. Last year, you could watch Gamecenter Live on Linux. Not this year. Thanks again, Bettman, you colossal @sshole!

  47. 47 Albert Buckenberger Jan 11th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Gary Bettman is an idiot. I mean that the Winter Classic sucks right now. I think that the Heritage Classic would be lot better than the Winter Classic. By the way, Gary Bettman, please bring the Jets and the Nordiques back. Thank you.

  48. 48 Charles May 9th, 2011 at 11:44 pm

Why the hell does nobody goes to these games? I was in Arizona a few years ago and the heat was unbearable. They basically give away tickets to a ginormous air-conditioner.

  49. 49 HockeyIsGoingDownhill Apr 28th, 2012 at 11:36 pm

The NHL has been using the refs to favour the US based teams over Candian teams for a few years now. Bettman figures he wants to draw a larger US audiance and Canadians are foolish enough to watch this crap no matter what teams are involved.

  50. 50 jeb meate May 10th, 2012 at 6:46 pm

It’s sad to see that all these years and bettman is still going strong. Fundamentally it’s the advertisers that are calling the shots. Betty just does his best to alter the game to fit thier watered down pc attitudes. Gee Gar, I would love to advertise during a game but hockey is too rough and tumble for our toilet paper company. No problem guys. let me just change the rules so it resembles something your more familier with .

  51. 51 TBLightningFan Jul 25th, 2012 at 11:17 am

Hockey purism is laughable. When it’s not about lack of snow (Eyes rolling), you guys resort to twisting the facts about a given team and their struggles. Fact: Gary Bettman did not grant us the Lightning. It was John Ziegler, and the bid was made by none other than Phil Esposito himself, who to this day remains with the club. Before Jeff Vinik took over and “”permanently!!!”" secured this franchises’ future, Espo raised over $80 million locally when he couldn’t even raise $1 million the 1st time. We all want Quebec to have a new team, we’re just sick of you people trying to hijack ours.

  52. 52 Philippe Ouimet Aug 11th, 2012 at 11:34 am

Obviously Bettman has to go and I will add also all the GREED that surrounds the owners and players alike which mainly responsible for this mess.
Hall of famer Bernard Boom Boom Geffrion resumed it so well in a telephone interview a few days before his passing. When asked by Ron Fournier why he didn’t watch NHL games anymore the Boomer politely said the game had changed and he had lost interst BUT when Fournier insisted on a precision Geffrion simply said I SPEAK FOR MYSELF BUT I’M SURE MOST OF MY FORMER TEAMMATES SHARE THE SAME OPINION…I WOULD HAVE PLAYED FOR FREE JUST TO WEAR THE JERSEY!!!!!

  53. 53 Dave "Killer" Carlson Aug 30th, 2012 at 12:02 am

Every year as a kid I Would look forward to the All Star Game and Skills Competition until Gary Bettman turned it into some Disney on Ice homosexual freakshow. We are gonna have Drake play for people who like Hockey ? Yeah good call Douchebag. I understand Hockeys a family thing and im not calling for a bloodbath but you have pussified our sport to the max players are scared to play physical because they know they will get 2 minutes from your team of nazis you call referees you have turned our sport into a PG mickey mouse piece of poop you try stuffing Sidney Crosby down every ones throat like he is the second coming and under utilize key talents like Pavel Datsyuk and Evengi Malkin (the guy who carried Crosbys team on his back this year) and no one fights anymore or protects key players because key players have nothing to worry about because no one can get hit anymore you have adjusted the rules for sissy europeans. Ratings are down because their are no longer any interesting rivalries you have stolen one year from our sport (2004) dont take another you grimey corporate piece of poo Suck my d*** Adolf Bettman

  54. 54 Paul Sep 7th, 2012 at 4:51 pm

everyone please sign the petition to stop bettman’s lockout

    we want our season!!!!!

  55. 55 Patrick Sep 11th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

3 work stopages thanks Bettman…yeah that’s a great way to grow the league!! I’ve been a diehard fan…I think I found my breaking point if this season is scrapped! I won’t be back until Bettman is gone.

I have never such a stubborn jerk trying so very hard in keeping hockey – and the neighbouring community in a losing proposition in the desert with Glendale. WHAT-A-L0SER.

We have a longstanding hockey tradition here in Canada – and in a few other cities in the USA that have EARNED the right to an NHL hockey team.

There are places (Quebec City) where part of hockey history was born for shit’s sake and where they are buiding RIGHT NOW an extraordinary NHL caliber building and have a ready-to-invest media mogul ready to dish out the money to buy the coyotes. They send build updates weekly.

This dumb-ass Bettman said last week ” Apparently, they semm to be building a rink there”

How insulting. GET RID of the guy before he sinks the whole NHL ship, its already only half-affloat because of him.
