Tracking the NHL…

Update (5/16/08): You can listen to the podcast of yesterday’s NHL Hour by clicking here.

According to Michael McCarthy of USA Today, the NHL and Versus are considering (re)introducing “puck-tracking” technology into broadcasts of NHL games, which they might put into effect as soon as next season. However, the Globe and Mail reports that this tracking technology would only be used in replays (see bottom of article) and not during live action.

When FOX covered NHL games in the 1990′s, they introduced a “glowing puck” technology… the puck had a blue streak behind it when traveling at low speeds, and then would have a red streak behind it when traveling at higher, slap-shot like speeds. It was supposed to make keeping track of the puck easier for fans watching the games on TV, but most people thought it was a foolish idea and interfered with their ability to focus on other aspects of the game. Players also complained that the FOX puck reacted differently than normal pucks and caused some problems for them.

Either way, we don’t see how this would help the NHL or its fans in any way. The idea has been tried and tested in the past, and it failed. There are obviously plenty of people who can follow the game without being taken by the hand and told exactly how to watch it… it is pretty easy to catch on to where the puck is just by watching the motion of the players and the flow of the game. Furthermore, with HDTV spreading rapidly through North American homes and bars, viewers can almost read the “NHL” logo on the puck ;) We see this as another decision by the NHL to help attract non-market fans, while turning off long-time and die-hard fans at the same time… which would result in a net loss in NHL fans’ enjoyment of the game and possibly the number of NHL fans. With Versus’ commentary of the games already being about the worst we’ve ever heard (try listening to Doc Emrick & Eddie Olczyk for a whole game) , they must be trying to see how far and low they can go with their awful coverage of the NHL. Who knows, maybe they’ll want to put virtual ads on the glass and ice during the game. Ahh, never miss an opportunity to make an extra penny Gary!!! You might need those pennies to pay off another owner in the future.

On a much brighter note, Diane Brady of Business Week emailed us a link to a video of an interview that she recently conducted with Gary Bettman. During the interview she asks Bettman what he thinks of sites such as ours, and also asks some other very good questions. Check it out!.

Additionally, today’s NHL Hour with Gary Bettman will feature guest Ken Holland — the great General Manager of the Detroit Red Wings. The show airs at 4p.m. EST on XM Radio channel 204, or you can listen through the NHL’s live stream (which now includes advertisements for your viewing pleasure). You can call your questions/comments in at 1-877-645-6696 or e-mail NHLHOUR@NHL.com. If you miss the show today, we will post a link to the NHL’s podcast of the show tomorrow.

We are STILL waiting to hear Gary Bettman address the ongoing issue of games on the NHL Network not being shown on NHL Center Ice… which is making fans who have already paid at least $145 a season, pay another monthly fee to get what they originally paid for.

We will post a link to the NHL’s podcast of the show early tomorrow.

The issue regarding games on the NHL Network not being shown on NHL Center Ice was not addressed by Mr. Bettman once again. And it appears as though nothing has been done about it. Tonight, the Atlanta Thrashers vs. Washington Capitals game will be shown on the NHL Network, but will not be shown on NHL Center Ice. Multiple emails have been sent to the NHL (including Mr. Bettman), the question was asked last week on the NHL Hour, and still there has been no response or reasoning given from the NHL, besides Bettman saying last week that he will “look into it”.
Gary Bettman must have gotten our emails… because he confirmed on this show that his email address is indeed gbettman@nhl.com, which we posted here on FB a long time ago. So keep sending him emails and demand action!

Gary BettmanToday’s (03/13/08) guest on “NHL Hour” with Gary Bettman will be Maple Leafs executive Richard Peddie. The show airs at 4p.m. EST on XM Radio channel 204, or you can listen through the NHL’s live stream. You can call your questions/comments in at 1-877-645-6696 or e-mail NHLHOUR@NHL.com. We’re waiting to hear Gary Bettman’s answer/solution to the ongoing issue of games on the NHL Network not being shown on NHL Center Ice… which is making fans who have already paid at least $145 a season, pay another monthly fee to get what they originally paid for. If you listened to the NHL Network last week, you probably heard a question asked about this problem.

We will post a link to the NHL’s podcast of the show later today.

Ask Bettman about his ‘Wild’ decisions…

Update: You can listen to the NHL Hour from this past Thursday (01/17/08) by clicking here (MP3 file). The RSS feed for these podcasts is http://www.nhl.com/podcasts/nhl_hour.xml

Gary Bettman is really putting himself out there these days… his NHL Hour XM Radio show will be on again today (1/17/08) at 4p.m.. You can listen to the live stream at that time, or tune into XM Radio channel 204. Your questions and comments can be sent to NHLHOUR@NHL.com or called in at 1-877-645-6696. Willie O’Ree, the first black (African-Canadian) player in the NHL and current NHL Director of Youth Development, will be Bettman’s guest today.

Apparently, Bettman doesn’t feel like he’s heard enough criticism, or feels like he hasn’t addressed all of the criticism thoroughly… because he will also be taking your questions following the NHL’s YoungStars competitions on January 26th on the CBC’s ‘Hockey Night in Canada’. You will be able to send in your questions and comments via email to askgary@cbc.ca.

So start getting those questions and comments together and let the commish know that you are truly concerned about what he has done to our favorite sport and league, and that we think the NHL can do much better!.

You might want to ask Bettman about the purchase of the Minnesota Wild by former Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold. As you may recall, it was just over a month ago that Mr. Leipold officially ended up taking about $40 million less for the Predators from a ‘local investment group’ (which includes outsider William “Boots” Del Biaggio who will most likely move the team to Kansas City), than what he could have gotten from Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie. It was rumored and highly speculated that Balsillie would have moved the team to Hamilton, ON. However, Gary Bettman had a very strong hand in keeping Balsillie out of the picture, and the Predators in Nashville, even though accomplished businessman and owner Leipold could have made off with over $40 million more if he had sold to Balsillie.

The fact that Leipold is now majority owner of one of the most successful teams in the NHL, less than a month later, makes this whole deal seem a bit fishy to us, and to others. Did Bettman promise Leipold the team of his choice or a successful NHL team if he agreed not to sell to Balsillie? It is reported that Leipold put up around $250 million for the Wild… so did the NHL somehow cover that extra $50 million or so for Leipold (after the $193 million he sold the Predators for)? Is this how the NHL revenue sharing system works? We’ll pat your back with everyone else’s money if you keep doing things the way we want you to? It seems like the first places to check would be on the NHL’s, Leipold’s and former Wild owner Bob Naegele’s bank account statements. You would think the commissioner of a professional sports league would be smarter than this… but remember, this is Gary Bettman we’re talking about. Sometimes power, money and ego can cloud one’s thought and rationale.

NHL Hour with Gary Bettman today on XM Radio

Update @ 10:15p.m. EST: To listen to the NHL hour from today (12/13/07) please click here (MP3 file, 55 MB).

Gary BettmanGary Bettman’s “NHL Hour” XM radio show will be on again today (and every Thursday) at 4p.m. EST. So get your tough questions ready! You can call your questions/comments in at 1-877-645-6696 or e-mail NHLHOUR@NHL.com. If you have any criticism for the commissioner or the league, we doubt you will get on the air… based on what we’ve heard the past two weeks, they only put fans on the air who praise Bettman and what he’s done, or are from one of the southern team’s territories (which supports Bettman). But we must keep trying! According to NHL.com, today’s guest will be Rocky Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks chairman.

You can listen to the show on XM radio channel 204 or go to NHL.com, where they will be posting a link to listen sometime later today… the link is usually in the top left box with the big picture and text underneath it.

We will try to record the show today and post it tonight or tomorrow, for those of you who are unable to listen in. Sorry we didn’t post last week’s show… we had technical difficulties.

So get your questions ready and let your favorite commissioner know what hockey fans really think of the way the NHL is being run!!!

Gary Bettman XM radio show debuts today

Update @ 5:45p.m. EST: We recorded the first “NHL Hour” XM radio show with Gary Bettman and Bill Clement today. You can listen to it here (MP3 file, 58.5 MB). Not too many surprises for us… they kept it “clean” and even put on guests who admired Gary Bettman and were very courteous to him. The one thing that was super frustrating was the number of advertisements (played over and over) during the show… and there was more chatter by Bill Clement, Gary Bettman and Marty Turco (who was a guest), than fan questions answered. We hope next week’s show will be more representative of the fans’ true feelings about what Bettman has done to the NHL, and hopefully will have more content/substance, rather than advertisements and Bettman worshipers.

Update @ 12:20p.m. EST: We have gotten word from the NHL that there will be a streaming link for the show prominently posted on the home page of NHL.com sometime this afternoon. You should send your questions & comments to NHLHOUR@NHL.com and/or dial 1-877-645-6696.

Gary Bettman will debut the new “NHL Hour” show on XM channel 204 today at 4p.m. EST with co-host Bill Clement. If you do not subscribe to XM radio, you should be able to listen to the show through NHL.com. We haven’t found the exact link to listen to the show, but there is a “Listen!” link in the bottom right corner of their site under “NHL Radio”. We have emailed the NHL asking for more specific information, but have not heard back from them yet. The “NHL Hour” will continue as a weekly show every Thursday from 4-5p.m. EST.

The only email address that we have come up with to send questions to the show is homeice@xmradio.ca. So get your tough questions ready and let the little commish know what fans really think about the job he has done!
