Colin Campbell is going to need some Excedrin after reviewing the Calgary Flames-Detroit Red Wings Game 5. The two teams have been pretty “chippy” but the third period erupted into a nasty black eye for the league with a repeat of the Chris Simon stick-swinging incident. The third period festivities started when Red Wings defenseman Brett Lebda tried to hip check Flames Center Daymond Langkow and both wound up on the ice in a tangle. Langkow then got to his knees, and holding the back of Lebda’s head with his left, swung a viscious sucker punch with his right to Lebda’s face. Lebda went down with a concussion and a two minute penalty for clipping. (remember: Gary’s Rules.) Langkow received nothing. With four minutes and change to go Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi and Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf tangled and the Wings forward wound up slamming Phaneuf to the ice. Both went off with game misconducts. It gets better (or worse). Trying to preserve his star goalie for Game 6 in Calgary, Flames Coach Playfair (wow, that name is ironic) inserted back-up net minder Jamie McLennan late in the game. Mac was in for a whole minute when he decided to take batting practice with his stick on Red Wings forward Johann Franzen’s midsection. (Jamie must be a Chris Simon fan.) Bye-bye Jamie. To make matters worse, with 43 seconds left in the game Flames Captain Jarome Iginla first hooked then cross-checked Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider. Detroit announcers (perhaps a little biased?) commented that the Iginla penalties were so viscious that a suspension may be forthcoming. The last five minutes of this game was ugly and the league will be reviewing more than one incident for further discipline. One would hope that Jamie’s hack will take him out for the rest of the playoffs and carry over to next year. And who knows, Jarome might have to sit out a game. What will Gary’s disciplinarian do?

Im trying not ot be biased here but good lord. since when is sucker punching an opponent a part of the game. The calgary hacking is just absolutely un called for. I have alot of respect for Canada and their game which has now poured all over the world and is loved by millions. So in light of that rich heritage what the hell is calgary thinking. detroit didn’t do anything to warrant those attacks. and we also kept our cool about it. Don Cherry has lost any respect that I had for him. It seems that he feels that american teams have to live and die by the rules but when a canadian team gets their ass handed to them then its o.k. to no longer play by the rules. they can just attempt to injure their opponents into submission. If the league doesn’t do something about this in a timely fashion then i pitty the flames in game 7. IN DETROIT.
I didn’t get to watch the game (was on a plane flying to Detroit), but I saw the replay of the Lebda/Langkow incident. Can’t believe that Langkow didn’t get anything. I hope to God that it was just a matter of no on-ice official seeing it.
Sure it was a cheap shot by Langkow, but everyone seems to ignore the cheap shot by Lebda! Watch the bloody replay and watch Langkow’s knee during Lebda’s “cheap shot”. I’d be a little ticked off too….
Lebda was in the right on his position, thats what every Hockey player would have done, you can clearly see Langkow tried to clear it by rising up and over Lebda’s check therefore causing what you seen.
I agree there should be some fines and suspensions thrown down by the league, that kind of childish behavior should not be allowed in this league. They were just upset they were getting their @#$es kicked…
It’s called a “hip check” not a “knee check” He was so low he was almost licking the ice with his tongue when he hit Langkow…..
Even if someone believes Lebda deserved a penalty, Langkow certainly deserved one, too.
Screwing up a hip check and hitting the guy’s knee as he tries to jump over you is a helluva lot different than grabbing the back of an already-injured player’s head and punching him in the face.
Come on, people, use some common sense.
Well, we see where all of Calgary’s dirty play got them…
and where Detroit’s skilled play got them
First off, Iginla cross checked and BUTT-ENDED Shneider, not hooked him. Secondly, many people have said this is not like Jaime McLennan, and it’s not something he’d normally do. I don’t care, he still DID it, and he is a goon. Langkow is also a goon, and I can’t believe no punishment was handed out. Following suit, Iginla is also a goon, but I’m not surprised he wasn’t punished. (Not because he didn’t deserve anything, but the league is just pathetic.) They won’t be as tough when they’re on the golf course and we’re playing round two. CHELI FOR COMMISHIONER!!!!!
First i would like to say that the Lebda hit was a bit low but I still dont think he was going for Langkow’s knees it wasn’t that low. Second does anyone notice that after Langkow hits Lebda he sees the ref and rolls over like he is hurt. I saw this and could help but laugh even though I just got done screaming at my T.V. As for the suspension and non-suspensions I don’t think the league could have done anymore. None of the other Calgary players did anything that horrible. Except of course Langkow he should have been suspended. I am surprised he wasn’t expecially since Lebda was hurt because of it. But i would have liked Iginla to get suspended because I can’t stand him but I don’t think he should be suspended. And I also like that the coach and team were fined. The ultimate justice was the Wings winning the series.
I am a Calgary fan… always have been always will be…. I don’t blame Lankow for what he did, I would have done the same thing and took my suspension if given like a man. I was not impressed with Iginla going around cross-checking the way he did, there was no sportsmanship there at all, and he is to be a team leader. Jamie, well I think he was put in to send a message to Detroit to stop bumping Kipper and since there were no real calls on Detroit for goalie inter. and bodies were being pushed into Kipper that a messgae was sent, but it turned out to be an expensive one and I was glad the Flames did not win the series. They played terrible. The better team won….. Man is Chelios old, but still good.
