Predatory Ownership

We are all aware of the controversy surrounding the ‘Yotes ownership and the NHL’s insistence that the team stay in Glendale. But our mighty mousey Commish is doing double speak again and it’s time someone called him out on it. Now Mr. Jim and his $212 million bid has been rejected by Gary’s meager legal mind because, among other things, Jimmy was rejected by Gary’s homies; da board of governors. Now were this league a straight up fan-based sports league with years of ethical conduct one would accept the decision and respect the league’s findings. But…Whoa! We’re talking about the NHL. One must understand that Mr. Ballsillie was approved as an owner a few years back when the Pens were on the block. Of course, once Gary learned that JB wanted to eventually move the team to Canada, he put the brakes on that sale. Then when Jimmy wanted to buy the Preds, the mental midget stood (he has to stand or no one would see him) in again and made sure that “respectful” ownership was achieved with the sale to a group partnered with Boots Del Biaggio. Da BOG and Napoleonic numb-nuts consummated quite a deal for the Preds only to discover later that in fact Boots didn’t have any real money. Boots is now going to be making license plates for eight years and must find some way to pay back the $67 million in court ordered restitution. Now that’s the kind of owner the ‘Yotes need! Man, and here I was thinking the BOG and dim wit were just prejudice against Jimmy. They ain’t predjudice against JB; it’s just that he is too successful. Now if he could come up with a good Ponzi scheme, I bet dick weed would convince the board that he’s found the kind of owner the NHL needs. He would probably be enshrined in the HOF along with Samueli and Spano. Given the current situation in Phoenix, it would probably be a good idea to institute drug testing in the NHL, starting with the League offices, since it doesn’t appear shrimp dip is playing with a full deck.

We’re back!!!!!!

We sincerely apologize for our lack of posts this summer… it has been a very busy summer filled with higher priorities. We know we have missed out on covering some major and controversial stories surrounding our favorite little man… but we are hoping to get things back into full swing for the upcoming NHL season, and plan on increasing our coverage and making sure we do everything we can to get rid of the man we all love to hate… Gary Bettman.

In the meantime, here is an email that Paul Lefebvre from Delaware, OH sent us, which sums up the summer’s top Bettman stories and our opinions on them quite well:

“Not bad enough that Mr. Bettman threatens to strip ownership of the team in NY (Rangers), and decides to suspend the Anaheim Ducks owner indefinitely for off ice legal issues, now comes word that maybe he himself may have been caught with his own hand in the cookie jar. The Nashville Predators sale has stunk from the beginning. How does an owner (Craig Leipold), a businessman, turn down cash money from Jim Balsillie in excess of $220M for a financed deal of less than $200M tt which he himself contributed $10M? Here’s maybe how.

Mr. Bettman promises Leipold clear and very quick sailing to ownership in Minnesota. After the commish sees the investor group trying to buy the Nashville franchise having trouble getting financing together, he either A, closes his eyes and says go ahead boys, I don’t want to know, or B, gets on the phone to his two closest confidants in LA Kings owner and Nashville owner (Leipold) and says make this happen, Balsillie cannot have a team. Either A or B is cause for termination.

Gary Bettman claims he had no clue that two of his closest NHL confidants - L.A.’s Philip Anschutz and Minnesota’s Craig Leipold – had lent San Jose banker Boots Del Biaggio a combined $17 million (U.S.) to help him pay for a $25 million stake in the Nashville Predators. C’mon Gary.

Nashville investor, ‘Boots’ Del Biaggio filed bankruptcy. Turns out that the ownership group of the LA Kings, AEG Facilities lent Boots $7M. Also turns out that the Nashville owner (Craig Leipold aka Seller) lent him $10M. AEG Facilities also owns the venue for hockey in KC. Del Biaggio has long been searching for a franchise to move to KC. The reasoning for the seller of the team lending money to a buyer leaves the door open for many explanations and we’ll have to see what floats to the surface. How is this tolerated? Maybe these two owners are able to say to Mr. Bettman, “if we go down Gary, you are coming with us”. This seems to me to be the only way they can escape Bettman’s well documented wrath.

How in the world is Bettman getting a free pass on this!? He is quite the politician, and seems to always have an answer for everything, but I have seen or heard nothing of anyone press him since the series, before the wheels came off Del Biaggio.”

Thanks very much Paul!!!

We will try our hardest to help make sure that the little man doesn’t get a free pass on all of this… so get ready and look forward to more posts from the FB stuff. Once again, sorry for our lack of posts over the past few months… it is GREAT to be back and covering the worst commissioner ever!!!

cheers,
Puckhead & JB

Duh Commish’s greatest quote: “Trouble’s a funny thing.”

Saturday night’s CBC pre-game show featured Ron MacLean interviewing our favorite hockey snake, Bettman. Ron touched on several hot NHL topics and a few of dim-wit’s nerves. MacLean asked a question about Boots Del Biaggio’s troubles with a federal fraud investigation. Ron asked what the NHL position was given ol’ Boots’ recent part ownership of the struggling Nashville Predators. Shyster boy immediately went on the defensive and stated that he believes that Boots has not been charged, but only under investigation. Quickly distancing himself with “I don’t know anything more than was in the papers”. Ron then asked about the decision to push out Balsillie over the Boots Group. With more than a little more squirming the miniature shark said he was not involved in that process and then, without need, said the Canadian Competition Committee had conducted a year long investigation and concluded that no rules were broken. (Funny, why did he have to offer that last part without being asked?) Hiding something Gary? Here is the video:

Ron also brought up the fact that Canadian teams are providing the bulk of the revenue and asked Gary if he had seen the Toronto Star article which reported the disparities in revenue. “I haven’t read that article” was Ding-dong’s response. (Of course, why would the commish read anything from the top revenue team’s home town newspaper? gimme a break!) Our little Napoleon then got testy and cut-off Ron when asked about American teams in (financial) trouble. “Whoa, whoa; trouble’s a funny thing” spewed out of the hole in his face. Funny when you’re a Coyotes owner losing $30 million? Funny when the two bottom-earning Canadian teams are producing more revenue than eight, yes, eight, American teams? Yes, our ignorant commish has a great sense of humor. Too bad he doesn’t have any honor (and resign).

There is more to the interview including Numb-nut’s cheap patronizing of Ron and Don, Wipe-oid’s ever-prescient employment interview of Colin Campbell, and more commish double talk.

Coaches Corner star Don Cherry noted that Ron did a fine interview and followed his advice by “takin’ it easy on him”. With all the squirming and double talk witnessed in the interview, one gets the feeling that Bettman wouldn’t agree with Don.

Wide World of Bettman

Update (01/27/08): If you missed last night’s “Ask Gary” segment on Hockey Night in Canada — where Gary Bettman took questions from hockey fans in Canada, live with Ron MacClean — you can watch it here. Nothing too new or exciting… but “Blue Skies” Bettman does strongly deny having any kind of role in keeping the Nashville Predators out of Hamilton, ON … even though there is strong evidence that suggests otherwise, including Craig Leipold taking $40 million less for the team than he could have gotten, which still has not been explained.
Bettman also states that the NHL is not considering any expansion… within Canada or the U.S. in the near future. One fan’s email in the segment asks about why the Red Wings are in the West… and Gary’s response is that if the Wings moved to the East, a team would have to move to the West, which no team is willing to do. But what if an expansion team were to be put in Las Vegas or Kansas City? We aren’t huge fans of the idea, but just want to point out that it is definitely a possibility… even though Gary Bettman always seems to avoid bringing up the possibility when questioned about expansion.

The NHL has announced it will open next season with two games in Europe. Oh boy; Jagr and Lecavalier to Prague and Sid and Alfredsson to Stockholm. Yeah, it’s not the teams that are important; Gary’s just pushin’ a few stars to get more exposure. “We’re all pretty excited about that” were uttered from the hole in his face. Typical Bettman; all cliche and no brain. (His “all” must have been in reference to lackies Bill or Colin.) Wonder how many Europeans get VS.? Yo Bettman, wake up! Starting the season in Winnipeg, Quebec City, Portland (OR), or even (heaven forbid) Hamilton would give you the greater exposure you are seeking in the market you are sadly neglecting; North America! (Don’t forget the “North” part, ay?) Paying –that’s right– paying ESPN to televise a game a week would also aid in this effort. You just have to start focusing on the game… not the “stars” who few people see. Sid ain’t the equivalent to the NBA’s Michael. Remember the NBA was accessible on television when Jordan played. I don’t believe Stern sent you to Europe, but many wish he would have sent you to the moon. Certainly, the sure fire way to create more fan excitement and to actually “grow” the game of hockey would be for you to submit your resignation. Do it dude!!!

Gary’s Almost-Stars Game

Talk about crying in your beer! Sid and Hank are hurt, Roberto’s wife needs him more, and the Lake Webegone Channel is the flagship of the NHL. Gary still hasn’t a clue about what’s wrong with his marketing plan. This writer is wagering that this year’s game of stars will draw fewer viewers than last year’s abysmal showing. After all, Gary’s been betting the house on Sid da Kid and the channel without vowels that appears in every 500th household. Yes sir, Gary’s marketing is a real trend setter; all downward! And those attendance figures… The only great thing about attending an NHL game now is the fact that the lines to the bathroom are shorter. Thank you Gary! We love you for screwing up our favorite sport! Hope you and Craig L. enjoyed your little back-room tryst. ($40 mil loss for what favors?) Hey owners; how about installing a commissioner with a little integrity and intelligence? FIRE the PYGMY BRAIN!!!

Every team will play Nashville next year…

The NHL’s Board of Governors have been meeting in the hockey mecca of Pebble Beach, CA this week. Yesterday, they approved the sale of the Nashville Predators from Craig Leipold to the Freeman investment group. This isn’t the last step in the process… the deal still needs to be approved by the Nashville Metro Sports Authority, and then by the City Council… but from what we’ve read, it sounds like they will both approve it.

The other big news to come out of the meetings is that the league will return to its old schedule format for the 2008-2009 season. The current eight games played versus each team in a division will be reduced to six, and every team in the league will play one another at least once. Under this schedule, each team will see the other on their home ice every two years, rather than the current schedule which brings the other team to home ice every three years. This means that fans of each team will be exposed to more players throughout the league and there will be more original rivalries back in place. It also means that teams in the Eastern Conference will have to travel west more, which should help equalize the impact of travel on both conferences.

According to Gary Bettman, “This was an attempt to be responsive to the fans.” Thanks for finally listening, Gary.
Now the owners need to make another attempt to be responsive to the fans and FIRE GARY BETTMAN!!!

Nashville keeps its team?

It looks like the Predators will probably be staying in Nashville. Metro Nashville and the group of investors looking to purchase the team, announced today that they have come to a lease agreement for the Predators’ Sommet Center.

This doesn’t mean that the deal is done. Next, the Metro Sports Authority needs to approve the $193 million deal, and then the City Council must approve it.

This comes as terrible news to those of us who were looking forward to some great hockey blues songs coming out of Nashville.

A Bittersweet Beginning…

Today is the (two games in London, England don’t count) start of the 2007-2008 NHL season. And surprise, surprise, it will not begin without any kind of controversy surrounding the league and our favorite commissioner Gary Bettman.

First off, the NHL decided to start off this season with two games between Anaheim and Los Angeles in the hockey capital of the world… yep, you guessed it… London, England. If you do not get Versus or NHL Center Ice (which we have previously documented that MANY do not), or were not part of the 17,500 crowd at the O2 Arena (owned by Philip Anschutz, owner of the Kings), then I’m sure you missed it. But don’t worry, it wasn’t a huge success and you weren’t the only one who had no idea it was happening. No need to fear though, the NHL and Mr. Bettman may continue to push the NHL overseas. Never mind that the NHL is failing in many markets in the United States, and that the league could not start the season in a city (Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Ottawa, Calgary, Chicago, New York, etc) that would fully appreciate and engulf itself in a season opening game. The NHL just might abandon all NHL fans of the past, present, and future, and create for itself new and few “summer teeth” (some are here, some are there) fans! wooooohooooooooo! ;)

And to continue with the great success of Gary Bettman’s quest…
we have been keeping you up to date on the sale of the Nashville Predators to a local investment group, and it looks like there has been a turn for the worse for the banjo pluckin’, bar frequentin’, and ice cravin’ fans in Tennessee. Apparently, it looks like the investors who were looking to buy the team are not very hopeful that the deal will go through. The city has rejected the requests that the investors made in order to keep the team in Nashville. Remember, Gary Bettman was the one with the strong hand in trying to keep the Predators in Nashville with the help of his friend William “Boots” Del Biaggio, and out of Hamilton, ON and the hands of would-be-successful owner Jim Balsillie, who had offered current owner Craig Leipold $50 million more for the team than the Nashville investment group.

What a wonderful way to start off a new NHL season, eh? Well, it doesn’t stop there…

Madison Square Garden, which is the company that owns the New York Rangers, has sued the NHL, saying that the league has violated anti-trust regulations, and is monopolizing teams’ promotions. If you haven’t noticed, all of the NHL team Web sites have a very similar look as of this year… that is because the NHL has tried to take over operations of each team’s Web site and promotional activities, and the Rangers and MSG weren’t having any of it. Based on our coverage of the NHL’s marketing and the way their promotions and operations have carried themselves in the recent past, why in the heck would you allow them to take control of your (privately owned) team’s Web site and promotions? It seems to us here at FB that each team knows their market a TON better than Gary Bettman and his other power hungry pricks at NHL corporate, and deserve the right to control their promotional media.

We have had official NHL Web masters email us after fans of ours have posted messages on their public forums about FireBettman. They have explained to us that they had to take the posts down because they would be fined by the league if they were to leave them up. This monopolizing of Web sites and promotions is just another step in the wrong direction of censorship and complete mismanagement by Gary Bettman and the lunies that surround him.

We really can’t believe that the NHL is starting off such an exciting season on so many bad notes… but really, we aren’t surprised… what we’ve reported could have only made us all see what was coming. Let’s just hope that all of this ends up in letting us see that bright light at the end of the tunnel… the firing of Gary Bettman!

Gary does Nashville

After chasing away a Canadian buyer, our Napoleonic Commish courted a local group of “investors” to purchase the Preds. Well, now it seems as though this group of local-yokels is not as well-heeled as first thought. Quotes from the group, and I’m paraphrasing here, include “we’ve made our fortunes and don’t seek to profit from this team.” The Tennessean is reporting that the group is asking the city to fork over $3 mil for past losses and to guarantee that 14,000 seats will have butts in them every season to keep the team in Nashville. (Balsillie must have been asking for mo’ money and a 14,005 seat guarantee; yeah, right.) The city didn’t seem to be willing to make up the seat deficit for the previous owner when it was 14,000 and Leipold didn’t ask for mo’ money to cover any of the $70 mil he lost on the team, so what up here? My issue: If you got so much dang dough that you don’t want to profit on a gazillion dollar investment, then why the hell are you asking for back pay from the taxpayer? Not just back pay but also a guarantee of future pay! Uh, let’s do the differential calculus here. Past owner: lost $70 mil and couldn’t attain avg. 14,000 attendance. New owners: get $50 mil discount on sales price from Commish Butthead, get $3 mil advance from City, get guarantee of 14,000 filled seats. Yep, Gary just done did Nashville.

There is a man behind the curtain…

In his article on ESPN.com today, Scott Burnside has confirmed our belief all along… that Gary Bettman was behind getting Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold to break off negotiations in the sale of the team to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie.

Balsillie’s legal adviser Richard Rodier has made statements confirming this, and ESPN has also obtained emails between Leipold and Rodier, which contain discussions about Bettman’s involvement.

It appears as though Bettman has been and acted alone in this movement to keep a new team out of Canada, in following his vision of making the NHL exclusively a USA league. The only other name we’ve seen discussed in this matter is the Toronto Maple Leafs, because of a fear that a Hamilton team would steal their fan base. However, we have not seen any official comments released from the Maple Leafs on this issue.

Burnside brings up a great point how Bettman may have overstepped his bounds and made himself highly unpopular among the board of governors, and throughout the league… duh!! What is it going to take for them all to realize how bad Bettman is for the NHL? Hopefully not much more… it looks like we might find out in September, after the next board of governors meeting. Fire Bettman!!!!!
