An Open Letter to the NHL and Gary Bettman

One of our dedicated readers – Mike Rink – sent us the following letter, which we really enjoyed and thought you would too:

Dear NHL Management, and Mr. Gary Bettman

I attended my first hockey game when I was 2 years old (a tilt between expansion partners Buffalo and Vancouver). Although my Dad swears it was a great game, I was asleep in his arms by the end of the 2nd period. Despite that inauspicious beginning, the seeds of rabid fandom were laid there, and over time they have grown and matured to the point where I consider myself an ardent NHL hockey fan. But, over the past 15-odd years, I’ve started to seriously question whether hockey actually cares about having me as a fan, nearly as much as I care about it. From skyrocketing ticket prices, to pay-per-view games, to the exorbitant price of jerseys, every year it becomes more and more expensive to be a fan, and yet I feel like, paradoxically, the more I spend the less the NHL actually wants me.

Over 15 years I’ve seen a concerted effort to pander to “casual” fans (glowing pucks, ridiculous game scheduling, and needless rule changes are just a few examples), while fervent supporters have been allowed to wither and die on the vine. I’ve suffered through this in silence trying to convince myself that the quality of the product on the ice made up for these other slights. And in the end, that’s what is most important – the sanctity of the greatest game on the planet. In other words, the fluff you toss towards casual fans (who will likely never be converted anyway) doesn’t bother me enough to leave as long as you ensure the game is safe-guarded.

What happened between Stephane Auger and Alex Burrows on GM Place’s ice on Jan. 10th was an absolute travesty, and I know hockey fans across Canada are livid that the very spirit of the game could be called into question. The fact that a referee’s personal grudge might’ve affected the outcome of game is absolutely the worst thing that could ever be accused. As fans, we need to know that what we’re watching is real; that two teams are battling each other on a level playing field for supremacy. Even a whiff of impropriety is a grievous, grievous warning sign. Even a hint of bias means all our passion (and dollars) count for exactly squat.

The NHL’s reaction to the allegations is downright insulting to fans. We’ve watched other sport’s governing bodies put their heads in the sand over controversies (notably steroids in baseball and referee gambling in basketball) and it makes me sick to my stomach that NHL brass would so eagerly follow suit. Your halfhearted attempt to resolve the dispute through a couple phone calls is not sufficient – this requires a serious inquiry. And yet you seem to be content to do as little as possible to avoid rocking the boat with your employees, even if it means fans can no longer trust what they see on the ice. I watched that game with my own eyes, and what happened there requires more investigation than you’ve bothered to make; fans are not satisfied, and that should be your primary concern.

Let’s make something clear – the fans are the only reason any of you have a job right now. Players, coaches, NHL staff, everyone relies on our continued passion for the NHL so you can feed your families. By effectively sweeping this under the rug, you’re slapping every fan across the face who has ever helped put bread on your table. Our wallets drive your business, and in my opinion that means you are accountable to us.

My reaction has absolutely nothing to do with being a Canucks fan, and everything to do with being a supporter of NHL hockey. As a die-hard fanatic, I need to know that every team contends on an even keel, and every game is decided by the players, and not officials; Mr. Bettman, you like to speak of parity, but I’m tempted to think you’re just paying lip service based on the NHL’s actions over the past few days.

I would strongly encourage you, Gary Bettman and NHL Management, to reconsider your course of action, and also apologize to every fan across the world who you’ve wronged today. Unfortunately, I think what makes me saddest is that I know this letter will do absolutely nothing – NHL management has proven time and again that they’re much more interested in protecting their interests than fan’s. We need reassurance that we’re watching fair games, and the NHL has not nearly done enough to provide us with that. My only hope is that this letter and others like it which have been written in the last few days will be enough to open some eyes, so we can avoid the same sort of scandal that has tainted baseball and basketball forever.

Mike Rink

Thanks Mike!

This whole situation kind of reminds us of Tim Donaghy from the NBA. Did you see his interview on “60 Minutes” in early December? He admits that refs held grudges against certain players and owners, and thus, would make sure those players had off nights by calling fouls weren’t fouls and vice versa… and thus, would help the opposing team win. In one part of the interview, Donaghy turns the tables on the NBA, saying that they intentionally extend playoffs series and favor larger market teams, in order to turn a greater profit. Hrmmm… anyone remember the Detroit vs. Pittsburgh finals series last year? And remember, Gary Bettman is a product of the NBA… think he may learned a few tricks of the trade from David Stern?

Gary Bettman has always stunk of crookedness… and that stink has just gotten much stronger.

Your Burrows Comments are bang on.. The “Dictatorship” of officating is absolutely corrupt based on the actions of discipline. Why else would burrows reaction be so emotional? Because he is reacting to what he knows to be true and is unbeleivably frustrated.

I would request a Police investigation into the officials actions including campbell’s with Lie Detectors.

What they are showing is corruption which could go as far as to control game outcomes which is exactly why Alex was so incensed. This is out of control … the only one paying for this the Vancouver fans as they see the loss because of poor officiating.

    RE: Aunger/Burrows

I am writing to protest the unprofessional, mean spirited report Don MacLean made on the Hockey Night in Canada programme regarding the Aunger/Burrows incident. Not to entertain as a 50% possibility that Burrows’ accusations are true is not sensible let alone fair.

Phantom calls should be extremely rare with four officials on the ice but they aren’t. That suggests the possibility that Burrows is right about Auger. Therefore it warrented some serious investigation by journalists. Instead, we had Ron MacLean and a self-serving NHL official trash Burrows on national T.V. Campbell was so expectedly self-serving that he was no problem. However, Ron MacLean’s behaviour was bizarre and FOX-y.

An apology from the CBC to all hockey players and Burrows in particular is in order. The MacLean/Campbell script and tape gave all the power to the NHL. The player had no input. That was unacceptable. There would be no Canadian hockey industry without the great players the NHL and fans are so fortunate to have. The players are The Game – as such, they are entitled to at least as much respect as the supporting cast.

If you are short of investigative journalists for the hockey scene, I am available. No experience, but better than MacLean.

MacLean is not the best person to be doing the Olympics. Credibility and likeability – zip.

Whether the Vancouver Canucks make the playoffs this season or not, the FBI and/or RCMP needs to start an investigation as to why NHL officiating is the way it has been since Bettman has been the commissioner. This needs to become more important and called for by the hockey and sports media especially should the Canucks fail to make the playoffs by one or two points due to the disgusting and unprofessional actions of referee Stephane Auger on January 10th.

The fact that Colin Campbell went on Hockey Night In Canada and basically bashed Alex Burrows with Ron Maclean joining in on the bashing is absolutely unacceptable. The basic fact that the league stood up for what Auger had done that night against the Nashville Predators is definite proof that an investigation needs to be started by the FBI and/or RCMP. Not to mention, sticks to the face go uncalled because the referees are blind and they don’t even see a damned thing while at the same time, a little grab of a puck carrier gets called for a penalty. What’s more, occasionally a player will be assessed a penalty for taking a hit. This actually happened during an Ottawa/Toronto playoff game back in 2004. Is the NHL going to try and spin this one since I have mentioned this? Seriously, the NHL (Bettman) will stop at nothing to purposely rig games and playoff series for/against certain teams… Pittsburgh against Philadelphia last year and the Stanley Cup Final against Detroit come to mind and for that matter just about any playoff series which involve Canadian teams.

What the NHL is doing dealing with the events that took place at GM Place on the night of January 10th is downright dispicable and fans who have lost interest in the NHL will not come back until Bettman, Campbell, Daly etc. are either fired and/or announce their resignations and positive change comes about with a new regime who will deal with league matters such as holding officials accountable which will help improve the NHL as opposed to hurting the league.

This unprofessionalism from officials and the league office has got to stop… otherwise the FBI and/or RCMP must come down forcefully and put an end to this blatant corruption which could result in jail time for some of the officials and/or staff of the league office.

I still love hockey and the NHL but yeah, I am dissapointed with the Burrows incident, and always have not liked Bettman, I think the league would do much better without Bettman and as Mike said, maybe a bit of house cleaning for the refs!

  8. 8 Bill Daly Jan 27th, 2010 at 2:06 am

As long as the Bettman – err.. I mean Stanley Cup stays home in America, where hockey was invented imo, I will be happy! Hey Vancouver, if you don’t like the refs then why don’t you wise up and move the team?! The ‘Kansas City Americans’ has a nice ring to it…

  9. 9 Sens Fan Jan 27th, 2010 at 10:46 am

    @ Bill Daly

I assume you are the same person who posts on this website as Mr. Bettman.

“Hey Vancouver, if you don’t like the refs then why don’t you wise up and move the team?!”

What if the Canucks end up missing the playoffs by a point due to the unprofessional actions of Stephane Auger on January 10? Your not funny.

I’m always baffled by the naive nature of the whiners that populate the world. If you seriously believe that fishy officiating only started when Gary drove his tiny clown car into the Commissioner’s office, you are sorely mistaken. The only real difference is that in the past we didn’t have YouTube or hockey players that were willing to risk looking like babies for complaining about it.

Don’t get me wrong: If the incident is true Burrows was absolutely right to complain about it publicly. However, if he, like the people posting here, doesn’t take it to a higher level and really push for a change, he’s nothing more than a whining baby. As long as people aren’t committed enough to actually making a change the level of corruption that exists in the NHL and every other major corporation/sport will never change.

This is just a perfect example of what’s wrong with the human condition: Burrows isn’t satisfied enough by his millions of dollars to keep his mouth shut, yet the millions of dollars are enough to stop him from standing up for himself. And you guys are dissatisfied enough to make yourselves unhappy and pollute the internet with some kid’s essay about “the tewible injustice,” but you aren’t even willing to stop filling pockets with fan swank money.

You aren’t whistleblowers, revolutionaries, or even genuine activists. Sit down, watch hockey, get happy, and indulge enough in other entertainment that hockey does not become boring to you. Replacing Bettman won’t change anything.

I been a fan of Hockey for a very long time. Since I was 4 years old and watched Patrick Roy help win a cup when the Canadiens had no right to win one. I have a decent hockey package and I really enjoy watching these games in HD with my buddies over and some beers. However, before game time I find myself now looking to see what officials are officiating because I just cant watch when the Zebras decide the games. The sad fact is the as we watch now and buy our jersey’s I can pretty much say with certainty that the games we once enjoyed are “fixed”. I am going to look for a facebook page requesting Gary Bettman step down and if there isn’t one I am creating it. I am tired of the shoot outs, face offs in the penalized teams zones, glowing pucks, and denying us Canadians affordable ticket prices. I also decided to stop watching hockey for the rest of the year and cancel my sports package. Its going to be tough but I am making a statement.

( Oh lets not forget the lockout )

  12. 12 Bob le Blob TM Feb 13th, 2010 at 3:35 am

sadly, the “Dead Puck Era” that ended with the lockout has quickly degenerated into the “Push the Penguins and other sad teams on the brink of bankruptcy by creating false parity among other means” era.

  18. 18 Bettmanasyster Mar 1st, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Bettman needs to go. Now he won’t commit the NHL to the Olympics. I am sick of Bettman dismantling hockey. He doesn’t know what he is doing or what he is talking about. To Bill Daly you may be the one person that thinks that Bettman is doing a good job. When he is an IDIOT. I would love to see Bettman do this to America’s football and baseball sports. There would be a revolution if he tried that. Hockey fans have waited to see the desmise of Gary Bettman. Here’s hoping it is soon. I can’t stand that snake Bettman. His time with the NHL will go down in history as being the worst commissioner in NHL history he may join former president of the US in making history as being the worse president of the US. Bettman needs to go.

  19. 19 Sens Fan Mar 1st, 2010 at 6:47 pm

The whole thing about Bettman not committing the NHL to go to the 2014 Olympics in Russia is disgusting. Gary thinks that Phoenix, Atlanta, and Nashville are better hockey markets than Hamilton, Winnipeg, and Quebec City. Remember how NBC cut out of the deciding game of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals Between Ottawa & Buffalo? Or deciding to place NHL games on Versus instead of the ESPN Networks and at the same time allowing NBC to only do one game a week and the game starts at 12:30 pm et (which means 9:30 in the morning out west) This summer, the players wanted the NHL back on the ESPN Networks and Bettman still insists upon keeping NHL games on Versus & NBC? It’s no wonder why the NHL isn’t more popular in the United States.

The NFL & MLB wouldn’t hire a moron like Bettman in the first place. If Bettman did the same things to football and baseball as he has been doing to the NHL for the last 16 years or so, you would definitely see a massive number of protests and riots on a large scale. Because of Bettman, I have really cut down on watching the NHL this season. I still watch the Senators, Hockey Night In Canada, and I will watch as many games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs as I can. Though if the officials under orders from Bettman are going to rig games for/against certain teams (see last year’s Penguins 1st round series against the Flyers and the Stanley Cup Final against the Red Wings) I will quickly tune out if any of this bull shit is going to go on in this year’s playoffs. Bettman is the worst commissioner in the history of the NHL and I would also say he is the all time worst commissioiner in the history of sports as well. Millions of hockey fans would probably agree with both of these statements. Hopefully Bettman will resign and this day comes soon.

    Hi Chris,

    Welcome aboard man!

I just looked at your article and before I discuss the stupidity of Gary Bettman, I just wanted to talk about the uncapped year in the NFL.

Yes, I think not having a salary cap is stupid to begin with. The more I think of it though, as long as small market/lower revenue clubs like the Jaguars are able to sign top level free agents such as Aaron Kampman (who the Jags signed earlier today) and clubs such as the Bills, Vikings, Chargers don’t relocate in the near future along with forms of revenue sharing available in future seasons (with or without the return of a salary cap system) then I will be okay with future NFL seasons which are uncapped. A rookie cap is also something which I completely agree with. This way clubs like the Raiders can rescue themselves from overpaying for rookies who underperform or don’t do anything at all such as Jamarcus Russell. So it is understandable that the Rams, Lions, and Buccaneers may want to trade down as draft weekend is approaching. If the NFL & NFLPA cannot get a deal done by March next year, then Roger Goodell & Demaurice Smith should both be fired.

Now with Gary Bettman and the debate being whether or not to go to the Olympics in 2014, how STUPID could Bettman possibly be? The USA/Canada gold medal game is exciting from start to finish and lots of people watched! I am very happy that Canada won gold! The experience of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games can grow the NHL in the immediate future! Bettman being the MORON that he is has to go and F up a major opportunity?! What a bloody idiot who has NO respect whatsoever for the sport of hockey. Remember Chris, this is the same moron who thinks that Atlanta, Florida, Phoenix are better hockey markets than Hamilton, Winnipeg, Quebec City & Milwaukee. This is what the NHL should be talking about as opposed to debating whether or not to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics. If the NHL doesn’t go to Sochi and/or screws up their chances of getting a major television contract in the States, then Bettman deserves to be fired immediately. This moron must be stopped in his quest to ruin the NHL.

Again, welcome aboard and you are welcome to post here at anytime!

Wonders quietly to himself, if the players can have a lockout, why can’t the fans? Maybe empty arena’s all around would prompt owners to get involved with taking care of Bettman once and for all. I know this seems extreme, but as the letter clearly states, “..the sad fact is, I know this letter will do nothing.” We all know this to be a reality. Its time, as fans, that we took things into our own hands, or just stop fighting a losing war. But can we do it, can we, as hockey fans make a difference, probably not. To many people who just don’t get whats going on, or just don’t care. Wishes I knew a serial sniper who didn’t like Bettman.

  26. 26 CHRIS THOMPSON Apr 21st, 2010 at 6:22 pm

daly … go to hell this is how serious people take sports… ESPECIALLY CANADIANS and their hockey, americanizing a canadian sport is one thing, but constantly dumping on our entire country with disrespect to the fact that we are the reason the NHL exists and will have a chance in continuing to exist, is just ridiculous. Furthermore Mike that was a great letter and i agree completely , though I am also a huge Canucks fan i feel regardless of that fact there does need to be a major shift in the way officiating is handled. That as well as many games since and Especially the majority of the Playoff games so far have been utterly disgraceful, i MEAN seriously at one point a Sedin was standing in front of a ref with a stick through his visor and nothing was called. Phoenix is terrible, files for bankruptcy and is officially owned by the NHL, then what happens, well Detroit is now taking them on in the Playoffs, even though the only get 4000 fans to show up during regular season home games on a good night. People unquestioningly allow Bettman to reduce the entire organization from literally something SACRED into something no better than the corrupt legal system Gary himself grew up studying. By allowing him to constantly ignore issues that actually MATTER when considering the system itself requires non biased actions from the officials all the way up to the Chairman himself… you effectively allow him to LITERALLY do anything and everything he wants with this organization because he has no need to fear repercussions, look at the 2 lockouts, how about Jim Balsille’s constant attempts to bring another team to Canada get not only fought by Bettman but also are seen as petty and pathetic. He lacks and mocks the entire fundamental element that any Commissioner of a specific organization should have … KNOWLEDGE ON THE SUBJECT … the fucking guy never played hockey in his life… HOW THE HELL DOES HE CONTINUE TO EXIST … we need a CANADIAN in their and fast

The “great” fairy tale story about a team where the fans don’t show up for the first three quarters of the season and when they finally decide to show up they lose their first round series in seven games to the Detroit Red Wings. Also, what you don’t seem to realize is that the Coyotes won’t survive much longer in Glendale losing $40-50 million. As for the rest of your post, you’re just asking to be flamed by others on this website who truly love hockey and are sick of what Bettman and his cronies have done to destroy the sport.

  30. 30 Tracy May 3rd, 2010 at 5:24 pm

I have been a hockey fan for ten years and I have never been as disappointed with our leadership as I am with recent events. It seems that bad calls are being made on players when ‘refs feel like calling a foul. They are making their bias very apparent and making a total mockery of a traditionally “fan base” game. I think the call that gets me really fired up is the call made on Detroit against Anaheim when Detroit got a goal and then the ref decides he was going to blow the whistle on the play after the goal was made. How about the lack of a call on the Coyotes when they hit Lidstrom in the face and had to stop play because of the blood and they just let the whole event go without a penalty to Phoenix. It is very plain to see that Bettman is calling all the shots on who will win the games and the Cup. The man needs to go so that the game will continue to have faithful and happy fans. I would hate to lose a great past time, like Hockey, to a looser like Bettman. Haven’t we lost enough to people like Bettman?

Gary Bettman has turned this NHL into a joke him and his goons (referees)
are by far the worst in all of sports and will obviously be until he is gone.
I must wonder where the times have gone where the players and not the referees decided the games. But those are gone now with no change in sight so therefore I would not doubt if over the next ten years if the NHL loses all of it’s credibility.

Gary Bettman doesn’t pay attention to anything unless Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin are involved. Those are the only two players he cares about. The league’s future is entirely invested in people who will buy this new product Bettman is selling.

Nice interview tonight on CBC. Seems Ron McLEAN isn’t doing interviews with Bettman any more. I’d be interested in knowing why this is. Bettman even had the tenacity to make a reference about McLEAN during the interview. Real professional Gary. I hope the Habs win the cup so you have to show your rat fuck face in a Canadian city, and get booed of the ice.

Wow! I found this by accident, looking for info on Bettman the pompous jerk. Good letter, Mike. Is it just me – Bettman took over in 1993 – the last time the Canucks made it past round 2 was 1994 – it is a fact that he does not like Vancouver, in particular. Game 2 round 2 this series, Canucks up 2-0 in the first but GUESS WHO’S IN THE CROWD? You got it – Bettman. Verdict? Canucks lose. Penalties galore to the Canucks, Hawks get away with a lot of s….! Tonight, Game 6, Round 2 in Vancouver, where we have led the league in home wins all season – guess who’s in the audience?? Guess what happened??? I’m just saying, I don’t believe in coincidence. I have never seen a more arrogant, pompous ass in my life. He sure suffers from “little man” syndrome – you know, like Napoleon??? Thanks for letting me vent. Get rid of the little creep!!!

I think Bettman ought to go back to the NBA. The only qualifications he really had in taking this job was that both sports allows their athletes to wear “shorts”. Other than that the differences are night and day.

Bettman is ruining a sport that so many love and he’s ruining for so many young athletes that desire to play in the NHL one day.

Hi, i stumbled on your site when i was looking for a way to vent my opinion about Betman, after hearing his interview with Ron Maclean during one of the breaks in game 3 of the 2010 finals tonite.

He shouldnt be allowed to speak in public..he’s an arrogant rude snotty bastard. what a dis-service to the NHL, i love the sport, the league, all the teams (except habs of course) this guy just doesnt belong.

I do applaud Mr Maclean for not popping him in the nose once or twice !!

    Please quote me.

Honestly why does the officiating get so bad in the stanely cup finals. If u actually go back and watch these parts u will see what i mean. The refs u hire are too scared to call a penaly on chris pronger he beats the hell out of everbody with his stick in front of the net but if some does it to him it is called for a penaly cuz he wines like a little girl. ANd in game 3 there were a couple of times when niemi made a save the hawks guys would get cross checked constantly or they would slash niemi and the one time the hawks cross check back they get called for it. Another problem i had is the reff was standing rite in front of a board play battle and some one won it and patrick kane gets punched in the back of the head u would have to be blind to miss that one because his helmet went flying off. Well all i can say is u have pissed me off and a lot of other people with how bad officiating has been and if it doesnt improve in game 5 6 or 7 i will never watch a playoff game again. Thank you for screwing up the finals

I wish that I could be the National Hockey League Commissioner so that way I could fix the National Hockey League by moving all the southern teams to Canada, and I think I just smell a skunk from Gary Bettman. I think that I could do a better job as the National Hockey League Commissioner than Gary Bettman because I know hockey more than he does. I rather raise expectations than not raising expectations like Gary Bettman said. I also think that Gary Bettman is the biggest loser in the National Hockey League because he’s the one who created a lockout. Man, I really can’t stand that jerk because he’s a big fat liar in the National Hockey League. Agree?

  51. 51 Albert Buckenberger Jul 7th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Although I’m an American, but I’m really supporting Canada and the Canadians to get their hockey teams back. Mr. Bill Daly, I can’t believe that you’re supporting that scum (Gary Bettman), and guess what? Mr. Bill Daly, that makes you a scum just like Gary Bettman. Mr. Bill Daly, please do the Canadians and me a favor. Please quit as a Deputy Commissioner in the National Hockey League although I’m an anti-Gary Bettman because that’s my political view of hockey. Would you guys agree with me on this one?

  52. 52 Palumbo Aug 26th, 2010 at 12:08 am

I see Donald Fehr is set to become the leader of the players’ union.

This probably means one of two things:
    1. Fehr and Bettman get so stubborn that there’s a 3-year strike/lockout, thus demolishing the NHL.
    2. Fehr and Bettman so discredit each other in the first 6 months that both have to resign, thus saving the NHL.

I know which one I’m hoping for.

  53. 53 Sens Fan Aug 26th, 2010 at 9:27 am

Out of the two scenarios you mentioned, hopefully the second secnario happens so that not only Donald Fehr is gone, it would also mean the end of Gary Bettman as commissioner. Let’s hope that this scenario plays out for the next year and both of them are forced to resign.

Can someone please fire this guy (Gary Bettman)? Gary Bettman is the biggest joke in the National Hockey League. Either Gary Bettman should be fired or quit as the National Hockey League Commissioner or I heard that he’s pursuing a job in Major League Baseball. Agree?

what pisses me off is the fact that bettman, the little weasel that he is, knows theres a market for new teams in canada yet refuses to allow another team to be placed there, balsillie has been trying for years now, Winnipeg already has everything a team needs yet they wnt allow it, wtf, hockey was made by CANADIANS for CANADIANS then everyone else jumped in to help it expand, yeah, nice, but theres 6 fuckin teams in canada, and like 24 in the states, im sick of bettman and his fellow american partners dictating and taking over something that wasnt theirs to begin with, assholes

Really how long do we have to wait before this assh— Betman does something about these looser hockey player, when someone is killed or put in a wheel chair for life. These young men love the game that requires skill, intelligence and clean physical contact, not to be blindsided, hit from behind or cheap head shot etc. that these cowards like to do and if any jack ass Coach (which they do) is caught or known to send out one of these loosers to hit or injury another then they should be kicked out of the league for a period of at least 5 YEARS, any player disabled for an illegal hit and forced to leave the game, then the goof player who caused the injury should also be kicked out of the league for life period.
IT IS TIME FOR BETMAN TO GO,LEAVE,GET LOST, DISSAPPEAR,VANISH OR WHATEVER, JUST GO,we need new faces not his sad looking thing and he has no balls to do as we the FANS (most of us) wish. I want to see good fast HOCKEY PLAYERS play, a good fast clean game without a player being put in the hospital by some LOOSER who can’t do anything else but hit player and wish to injury them badly.
The hits on Sydney Crosbie is just only one example, he my not be able to play at his level again (I don’t think he will) or may not play period because of these LOOSERS who’s cheap hit to the head has caused serious damage.

  62. 62 Helene M. Schneider Apr 13th, 2011 at 2:38 pm

How about tossing Colin Campbell as well. Any game where there is a controversial hit that involves either the NY Rangers or the Boston Bruins is always on the side of the above-named teams. The Rangers, as he was a Ranger and Boston because his son plays there. Big Z hit someone (don’t remember who) and he was severely injured – perhaps a concussion. Was he suspended? NO! And closer to home for me, Marion Gaborik hit Franz Nielsen into the boards with a head shot that left him dazed and concussed. I tho’t head shots were automatic suspensions. But, oh no – the Rangers are excluded from disciplinary action as they are a big revenue team. Phoeey. This has been going on for years with Bettman and Campbell. As fans who love the game, we have no say, no influence, nothing.
And talk about stupid rules – when the puck goes over the glass, and I’ve watched it enough times to know that 99% of the time it is NOT a deliberate delay of game – we’re talking high speed action here. Yet the unlucky guy always ends in the sin bin. Make one wonder why we still go to games.

  67. 67 TheDarkOne May 20th, 2011 at 11:57 pm

The only thing Mr. Bettman is trying to do is to keep his Americano compadres happy dappy campers because he has no real friends. He is a typical selfish little boy who refuses to share his “toys” with the other little children. Well, to that I say Mr. Bettman is sorely mistaken, as what he calls “his” was never his to begin with—give back the NHL and Lord Stanley’s Cup Mr. Bettman, or forever be tormented in the black abyss made especially for you by the hockey gods, whom you have not only insulted, but caused much strife and anger amongst. May the hockey gods be merciless in their judgement of your soul Mr. Bettman—you shame the true spirit of hockey.

I played semi pro for the old Maine Mariners in the old coliseum, in Portland. I have a right to speak my mind

I used to breath ,live and jumped at the chance to play with the old timers, watch on T.V or if in a car turning on the radio to hear the game.
What has happened to the NHL? it’s now an American product like Mr Betman wanted. He sold out Canada and welcomed the big bucks at the expense of every fan, team owners and players who are getting picked off left right and center, I have racked my skull over…”what the @~#$~#$~3 is going on??? why hasn’t someone step in and put a stop to this hitman oops betman hockey bloodbath. We all love a good hard hit and we love to see p[layers get crunched on the boards, god knows i have my broken bones to prove it, but in my days (1970′S) we never got a high stick, never got an elbow o the face and never and repeat never an Indian tomahawk chop with a hockey stick. I play three times a week here in my home town and I give to Mr Betman and open invitation to join us , at lice lever for 1 1/2 hours of old timers hockey and then and only then will you understand the game. Your being in charge of the NHL is like me walking into an operating room and doing a triple bypass on a 90 year old man, I am not a doctor , i do not belong there. You are not a hockey player or coach and you do not belong in the driver seat and the out come is as it is, I am embarrassed of you and you are an embarrassment to all of Canadians who loved the game years ago,. step down and join George bush for a cold one as to two of you make a good set of clowns and the circus!!!

So,this was an example of the referee choice. Seems as tho the one who take out the most players wins. Disgusting. I have bee a hockey fan for 40 years and I am either getting sensitive to hard hits or watching with more discriminating mind. Whatever, this Boston Bruins- Canucks series was disgusting in terms of referee favoritism and brutality.
I will re-evaluate my season tickets. This is not the kind of sport I want to support or want my Grandchildren to be a part of.

The rules must be redefined! Maybe it is time to play all the games with the skill and finesse of the All star game

William L. “Bill” Daly (born 1964)[1] is an attorney and the Current Deputy Commissioner and chief legal officer of the NHL under Commissioner Gary Bettman. He is also a Hockey Hall of Fame Board Member and former NHL Vice President and Chief Legal Officer.[2] Before joining the NHL front office he worked for the New York law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP. He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth and his law degree from New York University School of Law.[3] He is a big fan of the Miami Dolphins, [4] and currently resides in New Jersey. [5

As a Senators fan, I am EXTREMELY pissed off with Dan O’ Rourke. Late in the 3rd period during the Senators game in Anaheim on January 21st, Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson was taken down. There was no penalty on the play. When Senators head coach Paul Maclean asked why there was no penalty called, O’Rourke said it was because Karlsson “is a diver.” Maclean was incensed during the post game press conference and he repeated what O’ Rourke had said. The next three games… in Los Angeles, Chris Phillips sweeps the puck away out of the crease (notice that Phillips didn’t close his hand on the puck), the refs awarded the Kings a penalty shot. Horrible call. Against the Coyotes, Nick Foligno appears to have made it a tie game. Hang on the refs say, the goal is taken away and Foligno gets two minutes for goalie interference. When the goalie is the one who initiates contact and Foligno is shoved into the crease. Then last night against the Boston Bruins, late in the 3rd period the Bruins tripped up, hooked, threw down players from the Senators and not a single penalty was called. Then Nick Foligno gets a penalty for tripping… when the Bruins got away with so much from the referees. One of them happened to be guess who? Dan O’Rourke. For those of you that don’t know, Karlsson has only been called once for diving. It must be nice for O’ Rourke to say things which aren’t true and there are no consequences for doing so. Maybe the NHL should start fining, suspending, or even firing officials for being inconsistent or just saying things which are not true. After seeing what has happened during the last three games involving the Ottawa Senators, it gives off the impression that NHL games are rigged. If more people catch on, the NHL is going to have a huge problem on it’s hands and that will not reflect well on the league.

Bettman and owners are nothing more then a bunch rich spoiled brats that all need a good ass kicking; i started watching hockey at MSG in 1970 saw the rangers kick the crap out of the calif. seals with no stick swinging just good old fashion knuckle thumping.Oh and the rangers won the game to ; but back to bettman and the owners they caused this problem of over paying players so just go into the back room and settle this and don’t come out until you have a deal.I for one am sick of bettman and his strangle hold he has over the game of hockey its time to fire his ass by not buying another ticket until he is gone.
